I got a hit on a good chant spot 45 min out from the city. Havent gone yet though:tongue: but I would bet forest park all the way up would be good hunting for matsutakes. And I think a commercial picker licence is 200 or so dollars  for more than 1gallon of mushroom and if you don't have a permit in most parks its a 2 mushroom max when it comes to matsutakes... www.oregonherald.com/oregon/local.cfm

That link didn't work, tho' I found an old article July 16, 2012 talking about matsis.  No mention of the 2 matsi limit, tho', where did that come from?

And the article makes no sense to me, says:

Quote:

Bids are due Wednesday for commercial matsutake mushroom picking permits in the Siuslaw National Forest.

The minimum bid is $500. The Forest Service grants only 50 permits, and it expects about twice as many bids.

A commercial harvest permit is required and costs $200 for the season, or $8 per day with a five-day minimum purchase.

http://www.oregonherald.com/oregon/local.cfm?id=2254

So, which is it, $500 minimum bid or #200.  Can anyone translate for me?

Checked a patch from last year. (Cantharellus cibarius) They were hiding deep in the ferns and looked pretty dry. I was camping, so they sat without refrigeration for almost a day and a half. No flavor left in these guys, sad day:(

They look fine. I never refrigerate my chants. No flavor?

That is weird. You can dry out chants completely and not lose the flavor.

We sauteed a half pound or so while camping last night in oil and they were flavorless. I hate to admit it, but I used canola oil. It's all we had:( Almost no flavor at all.

I've heard they dry not so well. . .

i find they dont dry well, as far as keeping their flavour anyways

but they refrigerate well for days. i put them in a paper bag in the veggie crisper and theyre as good as fresh when you want to cook them

Hey guys, sorry the link didn't work. That's actually the article I was trying to post.from what I've gathered the commercial matsutake pickers place bids for the permit with a minimum bid of $500 since they only give out 50 or so a year.once all the bids are in the forestry dept. Accepts the best bids. It says they recieve about 150 bids a year or double the amount of how many they actualy give out. I believe I saw the 2 matsutake limit on one of the state parks web pages, I might be mistaken. I believe for mushrooms other than matsutake they have a commercial pickers permit for $200 anually or $8 a day with a minimum of 5 days purchased. So its two seperate permits. I hope this helps. And thanks for finding a working link to the article.

This is what the ranger station in my area gave me with my permit this year.
