Anyone have any info/experiences/ thoughts to share regarding this? All input will be much appreciated

What could possibly be bad about some idealistic young hippy taking a paid vacation on the ~$300 mil that Peace Corp gets each year to go fuck around?

Meddle where they're unwelcome, as white liberals are so prone to do.

Snake and goat are both very tasty eats. Living in Arizona, I can do without.

These days the Peace Corps isn't quite what it used to be.
-You dont' get much say in where you're going, unless you have some inherent advantage or reason for being there - namely - you speak the language.
-They get a lot of applicants. They get to be picky.
-Genearlly, the people who participate tend to enjoy their time.
-Cultural idiosyncrasies can be frustrating at times, take this into consideration - heavily.
-Racism may be widespread. Can you deal with being shit on for two years, and having no other person like you around for miles and miles and miles and miles - maybe even hundreds of miles? (sometimes these things occur with multiple people in one location. it's not a given you'll be 100% alone. You also don't have a choice, I don't think)
-Safety can be a factor, especially if you're a woman. Its a shitty discrepancy but is worth noting. Sexual assault and rape happen, and the Peace Corps won't be your friend when it comes to dealing with it. Google the horror stories.
-Assaults in general. A friend of mine got flown home early cuz he got jumped by a bunch of punks.
-Depending on what "program" within the Peace Corps you are in (you know, "health" or "environment" or whatever), you will have some sort of measurable goals which you will have to (a) establish, (b) report on, (c) meet or surpass to measurably and demonstrably show that your time there provided value to the people. Gotta show those pursestrings what they're paying for, 'eh?
-At times, these goals may be fucking impossible to meet, or may be a farce. You may or may not be OK with this.
-Despite how well you think you speak the language, you probably don't. I had a friend doing some environmental stuff. He was showing a village person of pretty high authority how to take a cutting from a tree, plant it, and have a tree grow from that. Well, the dude made a hack job of it, ruined tons of shit (essentially just cutting down the existing trees instead of taking a small cutting), and when asked why he had don so - said "thats how the white man taught me to do it". Needless to say - that shit can wear down on you.
This is all from a buddy who went abroad. Theres tons of testimonials on google. He generally liked it. Met his girl in the program. They've been together forever now.

Mm navajo tacos... That fry-bread
On topic, a friend of mine said she loved it- went to nicaragua. She's (full) hispanic if that makes a difference. She is very eccentric and has great social/people skills. Then again, I'm sure pretty girls are universally more accepted abroad

I REALLY wanted to join, and still probably would if they would take me. But when I saw how picky they were (they make it sound like you NEED a college degree) I didn't even bother to apply..
I just want to go somewhere and help people while I figure my life out

Do you have a college education? What extracurriculars do you have? Do you have a good amount of hours of volunteering? Are you a peoples person? It's probably not what you are thinking it is...
It's pretty competitive these days, they do have quotas though, so if you are in an underrepresented area, you have a better chance. The application process usually takes a year... Multiple interviews, blah blah blah
Good luck, I was thinking about it for a while but it'd mess up some prospective government jobs I want to be available down the road

I'm not entirely sure but last year I looked into it. You do get to pick is how it seemed. It had a list of countries that you could go to. I'm not sure though, either way the places looked great. No middle eastern bullshit.
