Wine Caps Stropharia Tek

Hey I'm trying to set up an outdoor wine cap grow in my new garden and have been looking for info and teks but can't seem to find much on details. Most sites say just throw down some wood chips and mix the spores right in in November...? Seems like a weird time.
Will I have better luck innoculating sterilized jars of spawn then spawning it to wood chips outdoors? Can I use wild bird seed and/or coconut coir? How long does colonization take? What month should I begin the grow? I live in Pennsylvania so it's early Fall and it WILL get pretty cold in the winter.
A tek would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, outdoors is the way to go. I would do sawdust spawn, not spores or grain. Critters like to eat grain.
Just mix it up with a bunch of wood chips in a garden or flower bed. Someplace without a snail / slug problem!
I bought spawn from Field and forest I don't remember what time of year I did it. Maybe spring? They have a basic process on their site. If you buy spawn they include a more detailed sheet.

You can do it spring or fall. If spring you may get a fruiting in the fall. If fall you may get a fruiting in spring. And if you keep feeding it wood I understand it will keep fruiting. Although I let mine die off because the slugs were getting them.

One thing, about the slugs,is there a solution or not really ? Would growing the Wine caps in a rubbermaid tub solve that problem ?

There are a few solutions to slugs. sluggo works well, but is kind of expensive. Diatomaceous earth barrier - worth a try copper ribbon or pipe barrier - worth a try. beer in cups - never worked for me, and it's a beer foul...
IME You want to grow them in the ground, because the soil bugs help them fruit. But you could give it a try and report back.
