Bringing Back an Old Question....

I have noticed that some of the Old ways are out. The consensus has slightly shifter to a more streamline set of informational do's and don'ts.
The age old question revisited: Polyfil VS. Tyvek as a lid for grains?

I think most will say it literally doesn't matter. Polyfil has more room for human error than Tyvek, but they both offer excellent contamination protection.

Pack the polyfill tight if you use it. Real tight. I have never used tyvek, but fwiw a single polyfill hole has done me right.

A piece of sfd covering a quarter inch hole and glued on with silicone is the only way to fly imo. It's hassle free. Once you make them you can use them forever

Polyfill + Tyvek = the way to go.
Why not use both?

I take a regular 2 piece jar lid and drill a quarter inch hole in the middle. Then I cut me a small square of sfd and put a little bead of high temp rtv all the way around it and stick it over the hole. It will be there from now on
Now we still have a 2 piece lid and any of you that have tried g2g transfers with a 2 piece lid knows what a pain in the ass it is. So I take a nice bead of silicone and run all the way around the rubber seal of the lid. Then I stick it in the ring and let it dry. Then bam you got a 1 piece filtered lid.
I will get me some plastic lids one of these days but these work great for now. I will never worry around with polyfill or tyvek again! Sfd's are cheap and one disk can easily do 6 lids

Psilly, that actually sounds smart as fuck to g2g easier. I thought you were saying you glued the lid to the jar but gluing the lid to the band is genius.

For a while I wondered why some of the cultivators stick with the one piece plastic lid....This is exactly the reason. G2G transfers are a much bigger pain in the ass. I understood the plastic lid the first time I did g2g. Ughhhhhh.

I agree with Whippy - I use Poly-fil and never really had a problem with it (well, nothing that I could definitively narrow down to the lid)....

Yeah it doesn't take but one time to figure what a bitch it is. I looked around at a lot of local stores and couldn't find any plastic lids. That is when I decided to just make me some 1 piece lids

So I see that I can get them from Myco Stores and the such. Is there a local vendor version that was repurposed for this hobbie?

Polyfill in your inoculation hole, a layer of tyvek under it...?
You haven't seen that before?
It's shown here... And a billion other places in the shroomery.

Oh ok I understand now. I just don't ever inoculate a grain jar with a syringe
I use an agar wedge to inoculate a grain master and then do g2g transfers to increase stock culture. So I have no need for injection ports

Ah, now things are a little more clear on my end as well.
Yeah I suppose the way I suggested would be a bad way to do transfers.
