no for real. its trying to rip you off. I installed windows 7 on a windows 8 computer cause i was hating the bad set up and having to sign up for stuff and the advertisements and stuff.. Now with windows 7 on it, it needs a wireless adapter driver for the internal wireless to work.. downloaded the driver off of Gateways website, then get the error 'you need windows 8 to run this'. Fuck windows. im linux all the way

I have some extension on windows 8 that makes it look and run just like windows 7. I forget that I even have windows 8. Seems every other version of windows sucks. (Vista and 8 suck, XE and 7 are decent)

You mean XP? That was my favorite one, interface-wise. It gave the user plenty of power and demonstrated a marked absence of frilly bullshit and idiot-proofing. A breath of fresh air after the atrocity that was "Windows Me". Vista was also crap, 7 is aight, 8 sounds terrible.

Yeah there may be a windows 7 driver for the wireless that you can get somewhere else, try to figure out what the wireless hardware is exactly. I ran into the same type of problem when I got a computer that was supposed to run Vista and I wanted to run XP, just couldn't get the sound to work. Eventually I put 7 on it.

Yeah, probably Gateway just doesn't offer the right drivers because they don't sell computers with that hardware bundled with Windows 7. I hate proprietary boxes like that, it's why I hate Apple with such a passion as well. "You use your computer that you bought with your money the way WE TELL YOU TO!"
Your best bet would probably be to figure out what hardware it is by looking up your system's specs, then google the wireless card's model number to find the original manufacturer. You can bet it's not Gateway.

It's actually the perfectly logical progression of Windows with respect to computing devices convergence towards tablet-style interfaces (and devices, more generally).
It is total bullshit when stuff that didn't need windows 8 suddenly insists it does.
Have you searched for the old driver?
IT MAY BE IN WITH THE OTHER WINDOWS DRIVERS IN YOUR WINDOWS.OLD FOLDER IN YOUR ROOT C: DIRECTORY, though, unless you've actually explicitly formatted the drive either between windows 7->8 or 8 back to 7.
Hope this helped.

call or go to a local PC repiar shop, tell them you want to buy a used wireless card that will work with windows xp+ for your laptop. They will probably have them and charge you like $15 bucks for it. I had to do this on a buddy's laptop when he downgraded from win8. The card is easy to change and your lucky that's all that wasn't compatible.

Oh, so this is a thing... (the whole not letting it continue to work in Win7). How dastardly and tacky.

That would be a workable solution if all else failed, but a Windows 7 driver for his wireless hardware may still exist even if Gateway doesn't provide it.

Yeah, this will work if you can manage to find one. I would take the wireless card out and write down all the numbers on it. Then search around, you may be able to find a legacy driver for it that will work for you.

Ah, that clears that up. I suspected OP's woes are simply due to a manufacturer's thoughtless updating of their drivers rather than something general about Win8.

Windows 7 is the new XP, Duk.
As for 8 I personally hate it, just as a tech and having to help people troubleshoot issues with it. It's such a pain in the ass compared to 7. Just the fact that you have to mod it to make it useable and "look like 7" is retarded. That plus fucking Secure Boot issues. Fuck Secure Boot. Also it takes like 10 convoluted steps to get into Safe Mode. BSODs literally gives you a frown face , instead of a specific STOP code. It's a dumbed down Windows 7 for the tablet masses, a little too dumbed down for me.
Windows 9 should be really good, going by Microsoft's track record.

Free Software, Free Society :-)
Linux is the way to go
Just say no to windows, don't sacrifice your freedom
Proprietary software must die, it is a bad invention, any program you buy should come with full source But don't buy your software, when you can get software that is as good/better for free
Define your needs and install the software that fulfills those needs or reduce your needs in order to be free
Linux can do 99% of what windows can today, as easy/easier , with Ubuntu i.e. Ubuntu finds any driver incl wireless internet, scanners, printers without even installing them, after a new install
And firefox + openoffice for free with a new installation, with windows you get internet explorer which is useless, and no office
I've installed ubuntu on 4-5 pcs, noone has gone back to windows vista / win 7 yet and noone has called me for support, that is new and they were complete windows newbies usually they call about windows support every 3-4 weeks, because they installed a new program that broke internet explorer/startup :-)
Always go against the current, try out what there is on the market, often it will surprise you, and if it doesn't you can always go back to Microsoft
Ubuntu or Mac OS X is about as popular combined on Uni as windows here
Ubuntu is better than windows 7 for office work/surfing the web IMO , and better at finding drivers too automatically without you having to install them often Windows is often best for games, because most games are made for windows - but Ubuntu can run 99% of all games, and 70% of the time they work first time, 30% of the time you have to do something to play them (but you still get the classical games with a ubuntu, solitare, minesweeper etc.:-)
If you don't play games you have no excuses for running windows

There's not even any mention of Windows ME anywhere on Microsoft's web site. If you ask them about it they will probably try and tell you such a thing never existed.

You just need to find out what chipset the internal wireless is, there are a few companies that make them, Realtek, Gigabyte, Intel, etc, then they sell them to OEM manufacturers. Just go into your control panel/device manager and look at the network adapters, it will tell you what one you have. Than you go to that manufacturers website and get the driver. I'd be really surprised if you couldn't find a windows 7 driver for the network adapter.
I haven't found anything that doesn't work with windows 7, and everything is stable.

3.1 was classic. 'File manager' was easy to understand, and i dont remember anything not working right.
windows 8 has some improvements, but for the last two years of windows most up to date version being prolific, most of the ass holes I deal with still run 7 and have all sorts of conflicts with 8.
It reminds me of my college... They sent out mass emails informing everyone that the new standard was windows 7, and all submissions, and tech requirements were to be based on 7. Then the next year I was graduating, and had to fill a computer class requirement, because when I tried to place out (failed the interactive test on windows);
I didn't know that they would be testing me on an interactive, 3 strikes and-you're-out version of Vista while windows 7 was the 'university standard' OS, and (testing on) a generation old version of Office (2002 I believe). I wanted to flip out.
I got three strikes every time I tried to hot key into something... each wrong key press was an 'error' so instantly jamming ctr+alt+something was 3 errors. Tab was an error when ever you used it too... I had to show up to this shitty class to... get this:
teach me windows 7, and Office 2007. I had already been using those for a couple years, and skipped Vista as my first 3 or 4 installs of it were nothing but fucking problems.
I never successfully ran any of my games on Vista. Granted I was an early adopter, I do not doubt dropping vista early and sticking with XP saved me many hours of trouble shooting.
Fucking microsoft...

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and I no longer can install anything. Myself nor any tech support guys have been able to figure it out. I'm planning on going back to Windows 7 as soon as I can!

I've been using Linux and Windows side by side for about a decade now, I in my personal experience, the Linux installations invariably cost more administrative time as they fuck up at some point due to incompatibility in updates, weird problems that turn out to be known but require an hour's worth of CLI hacking and lack of driver support for common hardware. And don't tell be the latter is because the hardware manufacturers are lazy; it's bullcrap. Fact of the matter is that Microsoft, with its devilish centralized, power-hungry extortionist practices just does a better job at making sure their OS'es run on current and legacy hardware.

How many people pay $120 for a retail copy of windows anyway though? I'm pretty sure most Windows users just buy computers that have it preinstalled, and the portion of the computer's price that goes to the OS can't be anywhere near $120.

True. I've had issues with ATI drivers malfunctioning, but overall, linux has improved a great deal to the point where common users can install Ubuntu or a similar derivative without issue. Currently Linux Mint 15 fails to reconnect the wired internet after sleep on my laptop, so I have to fuck around and figure it out but I think it's worth it honestly. Linux is slowly becoming more accepted, and eventually open source software will compete directly with proprietary software.

Did you figure out what the wireless card in the computer was exactly? There probably is a windows 7 driver for it somewhere.

That's the thing, with Windows 7, it probably natively installed the driver and it just worked out of the gate. Half the time you don't even need to install specific drivers aside from GPU and aftermarket wireless/LAN because everything just works natively. At least the laptop wireless always does In my experience with many different OSes over the years, Win 7 has to be one of the most seamless when it comes to drivers

It always pains me to admit it when MS does a good job, but I agree with this. It actually seemed to be somewhat of a leap forward in functionality, as well-- at least if you're running a reasonably powerful machine. It takes advantage of high-end hardware in a way that no previous version has, IME.
I also once bought a really cheap netbook and it came with Windows 7. Jesus, that was awful. They put Windows 7 on it because it's NewTM without stopping to notice that the puny thing couldn't run Windows 7 for shit. I wish it had come with XP.

My experience was that 7 ran fine on a netbook as long as all the visual effects were turned off. I had a 8.9" first gen Aspire one with 1.5 GB ram, and I would say it was just as responsive with 7 as with XP. I ran it on a 1920x1080 monitor after the screen broke, worked fine for some light browsing, low bitrate video and old games.

Yeah, I turned them off first thing and it still chugged like mad, even if I was just browsing or word processing.
I'd like to reemphasize that it was a really cheap netbook, even by netbook standards.
