Gymnopilus - need ID
    #18841377 - 09/14/13 03:10 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

hey all

i went on a hunt today and found these bad boys. they look like gym junonius to me, but the scales suggest maybe they are sapineus? however, they have a bulbous base, so then, maybe they ARE junonius? i'd like to have a TI comment on this, maybe bloodworm???

also, that last pic is of some definite gym junonius that are in the same spot i found some last year. sadly, i'm at least a week or so too late to get anything good from them. :frown:

That is a gym but that is all

that really can be said without scope work.

Much about gyms is still unknown.

yeah, this one is tricky. there aren't that many gym's in the north east that i'm aware of, but i'm still quite a novice at this whole thing.

that'd be nice, i do believe. i'll get a spore print going tonight and post it tomorrow. i love the place that i went to get these guys, it almost always has awesome stuff: gym junonius, puffballs, boletes (including painted suillus), chicken of the woods, honey mushrooms, and now this! i found these literally after looking for only 3 minutes too!

I will guess it's Gymnopilus junonius, cool find, I haven't seen to many of those.

well, they did blue overnight, somewhat. however, they didn't drop a single spore. not sure what i did wrong about getting a spore print on them. i guess its been super dry in my area, so maybe that's why? in any case, they smell right, taste bitter, and are bruising blue. i'm guessing they are active.

could really use a TI's opinion on the ID, though. does Massachusetts have luteofilus? i know New Hampshire has luteus (i've found them there at least).

Gymnopilus, hard to say given their state, its not that they are very hard to identify for the most part, they just all look the same at their later stages of growth (within reason).
Microscopic anylisis would be good. That being said, I Guess Gymnopilus junonius like the gentlemen before me.
