  • 1901:  Richard Manske is born

Quote:

Birth: Sep. 14, 1901
Berlin-Mitte
Berlin, Germany
Death: Sep. 7, 1977
Guelph
Ontario, Canada

The chemist, who in 1931 synthesized N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) the prototypical indolethylamine hallucinogen. At the time of his death in 1977 at the age of 76, he left a solid legacy of alkaloid chemistry and 160 publications.

In 1906 Manske immigrated with his family to Macklin, Saskatchewan. After studying at Queen's and the University of Manchester and spending 5 years in the US, he returned to Canada in 1931 to the National Research Council, Ottawa. Appointed director of Dominion Rubber Co (now UniRoyal) Research Laboratories at Guelph, Ontario, in 1943, he retired in 1966 and joined the University of Waterloo as adjunct professor of chemistry. His studies of the plant alkaloids span some 50 years and resulted in over 150 research publications and 17 volumes of a standard reference monograph. His other interests ranged from music, astronomy, bird-watching and Greek philosophy to the culinary arts. Elected to the RSC (1935), he was president (1964) and honorary fellow (1967) of the Chemical Institute of Canada and received its medal (1959) and the Morley Medal of the American Chemical Society (1972).

Stafford mentions that DMT was first synthesized in 1931 by the British chemist Richard Manske (who was also the first to synthesize harmaline, in 1927), and that "Albert Hofmann synthesized a series of DMT analogs, but little attention was paid to this work until the mid-1960s."

Richard Manske, educated at Queen's University and Manchester University, began his study of the alkaloids of the Fumariaceae at the National Research Council in 1929. During his stay at Ottawa he isolated three new classes of benzylisoquinolines alkaloid; the cularines, the spirobenzylisoquinolines and the cancentrine alkaloids. He also collaborated with Leo Marion on the early isolation studies of alkaloids from the Lycopodiaceae. Much of our knowledge of the alkaloids of Canadian Fumariaceous plants was acquired by Manske during his career at NRC and elsewhere and it must be recognised that these were herculean accomplishments only made possible by his legendary skills at fractional crystallisation of mixtures, because he did not enjoy the benefit of modern analytical and spectroscopic tools that chemists take for granted today.

In 1943 he moved to the Dominion Rubber Company (now Uniroyal Ltd.) at Guelph as Director of Research. His interest in alkaloids continued unabated however and in 1950 the first volume of the now famous series "The Alkaloids" was published with H.L. Holmes as co-editor. Publication of original work on Fumariaceae alkaloids continued, the novel structures of cularine and ochotensine were elucidated and some forty-five more publications appeared in international publications. His work made a vital contribution to applications such as commercial fungicides. After his retirement from Uniroyal he continued as an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo where the structure of the dimeric benzylisoquinoline concentrine, the most novel and complex alkaloid he had isolated at NRC, was finally settled 38 years later, in 1970. When he died in 1977 at the age of 76 he left a solid legacy of alkaloid chemistry, some 160 publications and a whole coterie of students and associates inspired by him and the subject he loved.

  • 1928:  Lester Friedman is born

Quote:

Friedman, Lester, Dr., DOB 9/14/28. 361S Concord Drive, Beacliwood,

The second Israeli connection was through Professor Lester Friedman. Lester was a professor of chemistry at Case Western Reserve University. He was convicted of conspiring with Nick Sand and me. Basically the government claimed he had taught Nick Sand how to produce LSD. I spent quite a bit of time with Lester Friedmann during the pre-judicial proceedings and trial time. At one point he told me a story about his course in Switzerland at the end of 1972. He told me that there were Israeli scientists working there THC Which is several hundred times stronger than natural THC. They allegedly tried to develop a factor in the loss of chemical warfare capability. I was already aware of the research that Roger Adams published in which he described the development of a synthetic THC that was hundreds of times stronger than natural THC and was tested in ataxia tests. - Tim Scully

  • 1973:  800-1,000 pounds of Brotherhood Of Eternal Love hashish is seized

Quote:

Brotherhood members continue to operate from outside the United
States. On September 15, 1973, 923 pounds of hashish concealed in
false bottom commercial sound speakers was seized in Las Vegas, Nev.
It is now known that this hashish shipment was enroute to southern
California components of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

Sounds like a pretty good dude. I'd smoke DMT and look at the stars with him.

I'd definitely smoke DMT with him.  I assume he was the first to smoke it?  I'd love to know more about that.  I'll try and look into it more, but if you guys find out, let me know.

What's crazy about this is that today, on a whim, I decided to try and find out when Manske was born and when he died.  I found out when he died first.  September 7th, damn.  Missed it by exactly one week.  Then I did more searching and found when he was born............TODAY.  What are the chances of something like that happening?  So, so weird that that I went randomly searching for the date of birth, of Richard Manske of all people, on his birthday.  Well Happy 112th Birthday, Mr. Manske.  Your creation has made the world a better place.  Today we celebrate you.

I know, right?  Was Mr. Manske on the other side, longing for his big day to be recognized by the people who have benefited from, and love his creation most, only to use me as a means of being heard and loved on his birthday?  Probably not, but it's an interesting thought.

Nick Sand was the first person to ever smoke DMT.

Why do you say that?  Nick was supposedly the first underground DMT chemist, but I doubt he was the first to smoke it.  I could be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure he claims to be the first to have smoked it, not sure if it's true or not.

From his Erowid character vault:
Quote:

Sand was also the first person to realize that synthetic DMT could be smoked for effect; prior to this, self-experimenters were injecting DMT. This discovery came about by serendipity, when some crumbs of DMT fell onto a hotplate and vaporized, inspiring Sand to try smoking it.

^^^^ This!! Loved it Learyfan thank you for this!

Difficulty has more to do with reading abillity and ability to precisely follow directions. You need no knowledge of chemistry whatsoever, you just need to understand some basic principles as simple in concept as: water boils at 100C and freezes at 0C. Otherwise all published syntheses of organic and inorganic compounds can be reproduced successfully by pretty nearly anyone with at least average intelligence. Problems always have to do with availability of materials, not esoteric knowledge.

Not sure if you got an answer to this yet but he most definitely was the first to realize dmt could be vaped

Yeah, I guess it's true if Erowid says it.  They're pretty damn reputable.  As is Bryguy.

Anyway, Happy Birthday Richard Manske.

I don't see why you were ever questioning it in the first place unless you don't consider Sand himself reputable. Sure erowid can be reputable but Sand is one of the most respected psychonauts on the planet and he has been claiming this since the  ∞Ayes days.

My question is since we didn't know dmt could be vaped for almost 30 years...how many substances are out there that could have a similar or different ROA that we know not of. For example, the rate in which LSD is degraded by heat has not been throughly tested. That being said if I took a some concentrates and dipped them into a pile of ~1mg of LSD and threw it on a titanium nail would it work? I've always assumed that it would just never seen it postulated or actually tried.
