Modems...
    #18841109 - 09/14/13 01:23 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I got a POS modem from TWC. They charge me like $7-10 a month to rent it. Now: if it breaks or whatever, I get a new one free. That being said, should I buy my own? Would it mean faster net speeds? I am promised 50 down, 1 up. I have a 16ms ping, 16 down, and 1.08 up.

That modem's standard doesnt even allow you to reach the max of your package.
Max is in the mid 20's for that modem.

Get something w/ a docsis 3 standard.
Moto surfboards are good.

what he said. moto surfboards or Arris are good.  DOCSIS 3 is very important.

also 50 down and 1 up seems odd to me.  Plus, depending on who your ISP is, i would contact them and make sure they allow you to use aftermarket MTA/EMTA (modems) and see if you can acquire a small list of brands/models that they know they can use on there system/head-(in?)

Yeah I have TWC, so everything with them is an uphill battle. Here are their approved modems...click me! I am looking for something that just works. I don't care about the price because not having the fees will cover that and pay it off. Which one is the "best" on that list? Money is basically no object (just don't go overboard)

I also checked the email and it seems that I was wrong. My speeds went up 50% not up to 50... sorry bout that!

Cheers!

Op even clearly suggested that $$$ was no issue, and that he wanted the best.
Why would you suggest a Docsis 2.0 modem?

Docsis 2 has the exact through-put as a docsis 1 standard, which is 42.88 Mbit/s.

Plus he even linked his "approved modem" list, and linksys' are nowhere to be found.

:smirk:

@OP:
Get anything "Motorola" that is a Docsis 3 standard.
I know i suggested the first one on the list, but i think it has a wireless router built in, which is something that i personally wouldnt need/buy.
Odds are you can get a really nice router and throw some custom firmware on it, such as DD-WRT.
Look for Asus routers....
