LSD might be good for mental health, study says
    #18839372 - 09/13/13 11:29 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

September 13, 2013

A recent study suggests that LSD might actually be good for you — what a trip.

Researchers Pål-Ørjan Johansen and Teri Krebs from Norway’s University of Science and Technology wrote that “there were no significant associations between lifetime use of any psychedelics ... or past year use of LSD and increased rate of any of the mental health outcomes.”

In fact, they wrote, it found psychedelic use was associated with a lower rate of mental health problems, according to the science journal PLOS One.

Johansen’s and Krebs’ conclusions about LSD and alcoholism were based on archived surveys from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Fifty-nine percent of patients who had been given a dose of LSD had either stopped drinking completely or were drinking less, according to http://www.dailymail.co.uk.

This study starkly contrasts the popular opinion that LSD, as well as other hallucinogenic drugs, can cause long-term mental health issues.

“The LSD that was being abused in the ‘60s and the ‘70s was a much different drug in terms of dosage than what is being used now,” said Dr. Bruce Goldberger, professor and director of UF Health Forensic Medicine.

The dosage was probably two to four times higher than what it is today, he said.

The study also suggested that the drug could be used to treat alcohol addiction, and the researchers concluded that it is effective against alcoholism.

“I would be reluctant to use a drug like LSD to treat alcoholism,” Goldberger said. “You’re treating one drug with a high potential for abuse with another drug with a high potential of abuse.”

Even if it did become an accepted form of treatment, it would be impossible to regulate, he said.

Gabriela Asuaje, a 20-year-old UF advertising senior, said she would never consider taking the drug even if it is proved to be beneficial.

“I actually had a friend from high school that was in rehab and got addicted to LSD, so I don’t really consider that it would be a means to treat people,” she said. “I think there are other ways.”

A version of this story ran on page 5 on 9/13/2013 under the headline "LSD might be good for mental health, study says"

Is this showing that LSD causes less mental illness or just that there is a link between LSD and lower mental illness

Could be that mentally stable individuals are more likely to be the ones taking the drug

Don't underestimate the value of disinformation in society, to the gov

It only makes it even more important for all of us to spread the correct information to everyone we know, so people will know they might not know the truth, and maybe research themselves

If the cops knew the truth, they wouldn't be doing their work likely, so there has to be some disinformation there too
only a few cops have the balls to stand out (talk to the press) and say arresting people for weed/lsd is stupid, and they often get fired right away

LSD is the peace drug  , it should be shared for free between people if possible

The Alligator is a student run newspaper out of the University of Florida.  I think it was a fairly reasonable article, give her a break.  It was pretty well balanced between the positives and negatives.  Yes, people can develop problems with LSD use, there are extremes of everything.

It is still unadvised and un vetted argument to claim that someone was, "addicted to LSD".  Before you print something like that, it seems like you could at least read the wiki on LSD and learn that the major psychedelics have very low potential for addiction compared to even sugar and caffeine.

Probaly because crazy people stop taking drugs when they notice it dosnt effect them right, while sane people will continue to use them because they can

I am ceritified nut job and never had a problem with lsd in my adult years or even most of my younger years.  If I don't have cannabis the day after I feel a bit mentally burned out.

I really think being crazy is a matter of being in mental pain and the choices of how to cope with that.  Most of my adult trips have been very pleasent and pain free.  It can be depressing coming down sometimes, good nugs very much help relieve that.  Honestly I think I will be coming down or going back up the rest of my life.

Due to drug laws and modern medicines general approach, I am forced to be a semi-alcoholic anymore.  Istill require pain relief, from either a drug from a doctor or what I can proquire.  I don't know why I have mental pain, but it's more than somatic concerns.... it's a lot like akastisia....probably from neural damage caused by ssri.  I never heard of lsd blowing apart nuerons such as images in a 2001 discover magazine showed ssri's doing!

i dont know what you mean about "certified nut job", but if you have skitzophrenia or personality disorders, try not toking fora few months to a year, than tell me how a joint makes you feel

the thing about pot is it has anti-psychotic properties, and as you increase your tolerance to thc and have a steady stream of the anti-pychs from pot in your system, pots no big deal

not saying you specifically may have a problem you dont notice from weed, but many do

its the mental vs physical addiction thing, when you yourself dont have problems with psychedellics, its really easy to say they are not addictive

its also how you define addicition, addiction may not even be the right word to use

if someone only uses them say, once a month, but has a terrible time everytime, but still uses them regularly even if there is a large gap between uses, you could call it an "addiction" as it still negetivly impacts their life/wellbeing, its almost an ocd thing

You'd think that but I see news articles go up here all the time that aren't even out with positive and negative points on the proposed drug. The majority of articles that go up here just report recent findings on a drug and that's it

I'm sorry, but if you know what real physical addiction is like, say from alcohol or opiates or benzodiazepines, you would not accept this analogy.

There is science and then there is addiction-counselor bullshit.  It is very important to be able to tell the difference.  As someone whose spouse has been in the drug abuse field every since college (30 years), we are talking orders of magnitude here.  Literally, sugar and caffeine addictions are harder on patients physically than cannabis; and it is way worse than any of the major psychedelics.

Nothing you impose on yourself mentally could begin to compete with the sickness from alcohol addiction.  Have you ever heard of someone having delirium tremens trying to quit LSD?

im not saying that other addictions arnt worse or possibly fatal, im just saying its easy for some people to get addicted to almost anything

my cannibis  use was out of control, i have stolen, racked up spots to the 2000$ range , i got committed for a month and quit no problem, maybe a little sleeplessness, tried going back to smoking when i was out and realized i didnt enjoy it

addiction is more than physical, if your saying only real addiction is having psychical symptoms, how do people get addicted to  internet, or gambling, or prostitutes or other non-drug related addictions

that sounds alot like your saying there is physical addiction and mental addiction bullshit

Correct.  Gambling, Sports fixations, material fascinations like cars, jewelry, etc. all can have negative consequences on life and family.  That does not an addiction make.

You seem to be confusing bad decision making with addiction. We're not going to agree here, but I think lumping all these thing together perpetuates addiction AND habituation.
