thanks for sharing I have always found history interesting
i think its cool that people used to think the earth was flat a long time ago like you could fall off or something
i kind of understand why they would say that but its just weird to think about
:mushroom2:

This is actually not true.
We never believe that, as far back as you look we have know that the earth is a sphere,
this was made clear by the illusion of a ship sinking as it goes further and further out to sea.

This fallacy is often brought up to point out how much humanity had regressed after the Romans, by saying,
"When we were Romans we knew the world was round, but not in the middle ages."
There are sources after sources showing this to be wrong such as the one below.

The misunderstanding arrived because of the middle age practice by the church of making maps that do not keep track of location but instead a mortal souls journey towards heaven or hell.
These maps were created in a very unrealistic way, such that it appears the cartographer had no clue the world was flat.

I'm not trying to get on your case, I have just heard this one a lot and I'm just informing.
This is a history thread after all huh?

Great information SARA!  I had always been taught that the majority of the people believed that the Earth was flat up until Columbus seeing the ships come over the horizon.  I thought that random enlightened people such as Pythagoras knew what was up, but the average citizen didn't.

Day Three: Fact of the Day!

Early 11th century, a band of viking led by, Freydis, the sister of the Viking ruler Leif Eriksson, discovered the land know today as Nova Scotia.
Although her first attempts at colonization were beaten back by the local natives.
Freydis returned in 1013 with a better armed fleet of men at her disposal.
Although upon returning, to Nova Scotia, Freydis became enraged when she came to find that two viking families were already living in the house she planned to claim.
She ordered her men to slaughter the two families living in the house so that it might be here.
When her men refused, Freydis took matters into her own hands by killing all of them by herself in a fit of rage.

When news of the massacre reached Leif Eriksson it but him in an extremely difficult situation.
For killing innocents, his sister Freydis should have ben put to death, but it is just as big an issue in viking society to kill ones own blood.
Erikssons decided to instead just outright ban everyone from colonizing in the New World

It's things like this that really get my gears going when it comes to history, because I can't even began to imagine the historical implications of what could have happened if the viking continued their colonization.

The use of hemp was diffidently widespread in places such as Colonial North America, in some cases even having laws ordering farmers to grow hemp.
Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Washington all even grew it.
Even though this is true, I would still say that 90% of the time when you hear the word textiles, it means cotton.
What I'm guessing you're referring to is the industrial revolution, in which textile production played a key role.
Any of these textile factories of the industrial revolution were all cotton mills.

wow, if they grew hemp they could have cloths and food(hemp seeds) and im not sure, but i assume hemp is easier to grow than cotten, i wonder if its easier/harder/ or the same difficultyto make cloths out of too

You guys think a dude going into WW2 with a bow is cool?

How about this fucking badass who went in with the rest of the soldiers to raid the beach front on D Day. Except, he wasnt armed with any weapon. This nigga got off the boat with a set of fucking BAGPIPES, and played his way up and down the beach during the whole entire intense firefight. Niggas were dropping all around him but he gave zero fucks.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/military-obituaries/special-forces-obituaries/7952729/Piper-Bill-Millin.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Millin

When we completed storming the beach, captured German soldiers were asked why they never shot at him. They said they thought he was bat shit insane and wasnt afraid to die so they shot around him.

He survived.

errrr i think its definitely a cool fact that may rival the bow dude, but i dont think he as a person is as cool, the bow dude probly did more to help the cause, anyways i guess the music dude sorta helped morale, like the dudes with drums in old turn based warfare, although in turn based warfare there is probly rules against shooting the music dudes

i think its one of those things that sound cool in theory, with all the what if`s, but maybe we wouldnt be here

theres quite a few theories of people travleing to the new world before columbus

have you heard the bronze age one? supposedly some people think that some of the copper during the bronze age came from mines in Michigan
and maybe mined by the minoa people

i also heard about a jesus like character interacting with the native peoples before columbus, i dont believe jesus actually traveled there but i might look more into it sometime

also i know you have refrence links to the past topics, but wouldnt be easier to make new threads? as some people will keep bringing up old topics, might be easier to respond to the questions if each topic had its on thread

Thanks everyone for the support!
I'll keep this going as long as you  guys are enjoying the info.

@hideandseek
I never heard that but I wouldn't doubt it.
I just wonder how they think they determined it, area specific.
There are weird ass anomalies like that scattered through out history pointing towards cross Atlantic trading,
such as cocaine being found in the nasals cavities of dead pharaohs.

And I'm probably planning on continuing my one thread model but this may change in the future.
Although to make things easier every week I will make an archive post full of the last 7 days facts.

Fact of the Day 4:

When you think of a serial killer, you might think of some of the more recent ones,
amateurs such as Jeffery Dahmer, Tedd Bundy, or the zodiac killer.
Even Jack the ripper, one of the most heard about serial killers of all history only killer 5+ people.

Todays fact of the day is Elizabeth Báthory, also known as the Blood Countess.
A Hungarian countess, Báthory a personal hero of mine, tortured and killed 600+ girls in order to bath in their blood to help retain her own youth and beauty.

Hands down the most prolific serial killer in all of history, Báthory was able to easily dispatch her victims working out of her personal castle.
Not to mention her family had power over a very large or central east Europe.
At a point she even became so bold as to set up a academy in her castle, taking in 25 girls from noble families (better blood) at a time to "finish" their education.
Below is an areal view of her castle in present day.

But as you might expect, the vanishing of 600 girls didn't go unnoticed, and eventually things were traced back to Elizabeth.
She and four others were convicted of killing the girls, the four others were all burned.
Elizabeth however due to her rank, was instead bricked into her room where she had to live with her cat until she died.
Although she was fed food and everything.

Many modern vampire myths come from the story of  Elizabeth, although recent investigation into her handwriting is leading historians to believe she was suffering from schizophrenia.

Good stuff Sara. My step father was a history professor so I got my fix of history while growing up.

He used to stop at every historic sign we saw while driving. Didn't matter the weather, if we were late. He even stopped at ones in foreign languages when we were in Europe.

To this day I also stop to read these signs.

'Never too old to learn something new'.
(sounds like song lyrics)
