Quick questions on my first grow...
    #18840715 - 09/14/13 11:03 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I've got six B+ BRF cakes almost colonized. I am going to birth them into a plastic tub on a layer of substrate (substrate, right? I'm so bad with terminology). My question is this: Can I use vermiculite or clay pellets for the substrate? Or should I get a bag of perlite, or something else even? What is best?

Also, I shouldn't have to pasteurize/sanitize it should I? Pretty sure I read you only need to do that if you use hay or poop or something organic/fresh.

Thanks!

I'll leave this here as well, instead of starting a new thread.

I've got a rust-colored spot in one jar about the size of a penny. Can I let it fully colonize, then cut out the "rusty" area and fruit it just the same? Or is that cake toast?

Is the spot actually rust? Some of my jars actually have rust in them that is impossible to get out because I drilled the jars with the lids on. Rust will not hurt your grow.

If the rust colored spot is contamination, you'll want to just get rid of the jar.

You'll want to use perlite and it is not a substrate.

You'll want to build one of these.
