I tried to take it out and look how much room the roots had, but it wouldn't come out of there easily in one piece, with dirt falling everywhere and pouring out. So I ask you guys, how much longer do you think they can go in those containers?

How long have they been in those pots? They look like one year old seedlings, in which case they could easily spend another growing season where they are now.

Do not rush with transplanting. And also, do not "check roots" of cactus plants cause it will damage always roots, just let them be. If you are going to check how much roots they have without proper reason to do so, don't do it.. You harm fragile roots of cactus. Make plan. Plant them to pot. And change pot every second spring or so.. Sometimes you can see when soil is dry and cactus is literally "fall out" from pot when you keep it almost upside down and hold cactus from the base of it.
Simple advice is when you take good hold from cactus base and lift it up with little bit spanking the pot, if pot "fall out" and you have roots form of the pot it's time to change.
I would grow these one in these pots atleast one year more and then transplant them. Also adding little extra soil top of them would not be bad idea at all.
Since I don't kno more than picture you show giving information is hard.
How long you have got these... Are you grown these on your own from seed? When you have planted these to pots where they are now? What is the size of the pots? +lots of more good information from you would be helpful to give advice.. But since soil surface seems to be very low in the pots, you can either fill up the pots with soil from bottom or surface and grow them year or two more in these pots.
Commonly I can advice that change the pot every two year.. Or if you change and give only very small amount of new root space, then you should change pot every spring. Another way, if you give very big pot to your cactus when changing the pot. You should not worry about changing the pot to bigger for few years..
but sooner or later trichos will show stunted growth or when roots starts to come out from drainage holes, it's probably time to change new pot to cactus.
Some commercial growers keep cactus in small pots many years and it can be seen they are very root bound cause roots comes out from drainage holes as very big amounts. However, you should not think so often when to change pot.. It's cactus plant still and it takes long time to develop serious root bound and it starting to see sooner or later as stunted growth and cactus literally "fall out" from it's pot.. then it's last opportunity to change the pot. I don't see reason to change pots to cactus plants in your picture. Just add more soil to them if you feel like it there are space in the pots to more roots, just give more soil to them.
...I say with these pots, you can grow them two years in these pots. Assuming you keep few months dormancy to them. Also just fill pots up with more soil, no matter do you add new soil to bottom of the pots or pour new soil just the surface of the original soil. Fill the soil surface almost to the edges full. They will do fine.
And I advice, do not check roots of cactus if you don't need to suspect pests or something necessary... Even changing the pot roots will take damage when you take cactus away from pot looking where the roots are and where they are not. Don't do that unless you are really going to change pot to larger.. Broken roots and possible moisture in the soil is not good... Overall is not always good if roots are broken and then planting cactus back. It's minor or in worst case major failure to lift cactus out of the pot and put it back, cactus have many kinds of roots, the fragile roots will always break when you took cactus off the pot so taking it away from pot I don't recommend it if there is no obvious reason.. Checking how much roots there are is not good reason enough to rip cactus away from soil and put it back.
