UK Poppies
    #1884049 - 09/05/03 07:05 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

A gipsy rumor is that making a brew from poppies and drinkin the tea will get one very intoxicated.

My question, does anyone know if the poppies growing in the UK do actually contain any intoxicants or is it just a myth.

Their are a few different types of poppy but all the pods look basically the same.
I have tried cutting a pod and their is very little milky stuff, what about if one boiled and simmered down, then smoked the residue???

Anybody help?

Yep, its only one of the many poppies that grow wild here. Mikey is right papaver somniferum is the one you want, others are harmfull to your health.

Luckily we in the uk can by the seeds in any garden center :-)

well look for a poppy that has NO hair on the leaves and IF it does the hair can be thin and on the back only

look for a poppy that has LEAVES ON THE STEM, look at the pic that PAID put up , notice those leaves?, see their shape remember it

a nice ripe poppy might have a whitish powder that can be rubbed off,but at ANY stage of growth you should be able to walk up and rub a little powder off the leaf

anything else ?????

oh ya look at the poppie pics at NANSNOOK forums, once you see orintel, stergitum(or whatever that CRAP is) corn poppy and others (these are the closest thing to the REAL poppy) you will be able to pick a GOOD poppy out of a crowd

one thing I forgot, the CROWN must be soft and bald, unlike orientel, which is fuzzy

I've got quite a few growing in my south east garden, gigs, hen and chicks, black peony, crimson feathers. I do have an idsentification problem with some of the seedlings. see
http://garstangflats.blogspot.com
The thin leaved seedlings are 100% pap som, but notice the larger leaved seedling to the right on my last blog entry. Is this p.som anyone? There are a load of these growing where I scattered my seeds and I have noticed differences, ie some of the thin seedlings are of a brown/burgundy hue. Could anyone confirm whether this is or osn't the good stuff?
