New HEPA
    #18840403 - 09/14/13 08:58 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I hav currently been in conversation with HEPA filter manufacturing companies and they hav informed me that the filters nowadays hav better technologies behind them(sumthing about materials and new pleating methods) so can deliver 0.45-0.5m/s leaving the filter face at lower static pressures and with thinner filters. I share this in a hope that either more ppl can now hopefully build one cheaper with a smaller blower or prove me incorrect. Please by no means do I say this to send ppl in the wrong direction but only as a means of getting information qualified or debunked. Cheers.

There are HEPAs with and without aluminum pleats. The newer tech you're talking about is glue-based pleats. They save weight, space, and the risk of pushing aluminum through the media. They are machine made and have small strips of glue in between the pleats. They are, in my opinion, better than the aluminum dividers.
As for resistance it is all relative to individual filters and they should have both cfm & resistance (at that cfm) rated on the label. There are many HEPA distributors around so shop around a bit and if you can, swing by their warehouse/storefront and inspect the filter with the distributor/sales person. They are more than happy to most of the time and encourage it to avoid returns and junk.

Hope that helps someone

My apologies my phone messed up and I posted it twice. Yes with these new filters the company said I can get a filter with a rating of 140Pa@ 310m3/hr, thus making the cost of a build cheaper than having to find a blower that pushes the same amount of air at 250Pa which can be hard to find or really expensive.
