Does colonized straw go bad?
    #18839954 - 09/14/13 03:02 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

This summer i've done a few grows of straight straw colonized with oyster.

They're dry now and i'm wondering if the mycelium will die or become inactive if i dont rehydrate the substrate?

I am hoping to use it for later and possibly give a basket or two to friends and they can just hose them to get them going again..

is this possible?!

Thanks!

there's only so many mushrooms the straw can produce and most of them are produced in the first flush (given proper care). The longer it sits around, the more times it gets wet and dries out again the more likely it will be to grow a patch of mold.

use them spent logs for compost or mulch your favorite plants with the straw. you can try to use it to spread to more growing medium but straw is a poor source of inoculum especially if it is old and already fruited.

Oyster mycelium can dry totally out and survive, just as it can freeze to -20F all winter and then grow and fruit when it thaws out.

I have a few oyster straw logs down by the creek from 4 years ago.  They're down to only a couple of inches tall this year, but started fruiting when the rains started.
