they were growing from a bay tree in the woods -- mostly oak and some bay trees
no gills to speak of, and i did not get a spore print
very small, both clusters were smaller than my pinky
sorry for the major lack of info, this pic is perhaps a year old and very blurry

Very interesting, But i would say with the blurry pictures and lack of information its probably next to impossible to ID. I have no clue.

Have you tried seeing if your cell phone has a macro setting?
It would look like this
If not i would take like 10 pictures next time, and pick out the least blurred out of the bunch.
Also if they had no gills its likely they were just immature and I would check on them in a few days.

nope. no setting like that. alas my phone is just shitty for macro shots. but like i said these are some old pics of randoms new species i encountered but was never able to ID
heres another one:
growing out of what i assume to be a dead oak log (as there were only oaks in the immediate vicinity)
gilled mushroom with a leathery and tough cap (no spore print though, this was from a very early hunt before i spore printed anything)

From the pileus(cap) and gills I'd say perhaps a pluteus sp., although the stem seems unusually big and appears to have a strange texture for that genus.

I would call it P. cervinus group.

I think it was drying out. OP said that cap was tough and leathery.
