Just realized I'm a psychonaut. Are you?

I first became interested in mushrooms two years ago, when my ex mentioned having some on a camping trip. As I scientist, my curiosity led to extensive research, and the literature out there was astonishing. The extreme safety of psilocybin (from a biochemical standpoint) sealed the deal for me, so I began growing.
After fits and starts, I mastered the growing technique, using nothing but spores, wild bird seed, and coir. Again, this appeals to the scientist in me.
My first trip was full of anxiety and fear, but I had a trusted, experienced friend who stayed with me (while he was sober). Over these past two years, each trip has been better than the last.
Anyway... I randomly came across the term "psychonaut" on wikipedia and read the article. And wow, that term fits me perfectly.
I love mushrooms so much because it allows me to delve deeply into something which has always passionately interested me since I was a child: the very meaning of reality, existence, and the human mind.
Mushrooms have allowed me to examine these issues from angles I'd never be able to achieve on my own (unless I devote a lifetime to meditation). I'm a psychonaut.
So, I get really irritated when I read posts on other sites (like Reddit) from kids who "wanna party" with mushrooms. I find nothing party-ish about mushrooms, at ALL. And then you read stories of people saying idiotic shit like "mushrooms made me go insane, I had to go to the hospital, now I feel a void, I'll never be the same." These idiots are why mushrooms are illegal.
Mushrooms aren't for having a WILD TIME!!11!!!!!!11!
Mushrooms are for study, for research.
Anyway, just wondering if others felt the same way.

I liked mushrooms for a few years first for inner journeys, then for partying later on when I found myself :-)
but never party without respecting set/setting/dose , I always consider each each time
I'm much into science too, but I believe science can't describe the universe fully but some very interesting ideas nonetheless
science is about learning from nature and trying to describe nature
psychonauts go to egodeath btw, several times ;P 5g in silent darkness like mckenna recommends
it's not pleasant, but you usually don't regret it

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a psychonaut. I have friends that also do psychedelics, but they do it for having a good time, raves/partying, etc. They always say "we should trip together" and when I explain to them that I don't do these things for fun and I prefer to do them alone, I usually get weird looks. It seems like such a strange take on drugs to these people, even though they do them themselves.
For me, it's the exploration of consciousness and the decoding of the reality around us. Glimpsing the world anew, and delving into existence, sentience, and life as a whole. To my mind at least, these aren't toys, they're tools. I'm glad there are many others that share my viewpoint

see man, the thing yr missing is, nobody is discounting the whole 4 candle, lotus position, trip at home by yrself stance... it's damn righteous to get spiritual with it like that... i do it as often as i like... but there's also nothing wrong with eating an eighth & shaking that ass at a concert either... or on the river canoeing... or just sitting around the back yard with some good folks who like to smile... it's pretty damn therapeutic, in fact...
there is absolutely no need to pigeon-hole the mushroom into one sort of tool or the other, it's perfectly capable of being all-purpose...

When I first started using these substances 5 years ago, that's what it was all about. Always in groups, always having a great time. I never doubt for a second how much damn fun these things can be, but after doing it however many times, I've sort of outgrown it (not to sound condescending in any way). I wouldn't doubt it if I had a few more group fun sessions in the future, but for now, I focus on introspection and self-therapy.

I'm tripping because I love pschedelics, and I love having a good time. But I'm more about the mystical and "magical" side of psychedelics, although I always trip with friends and have a good time. 50/50 =)

To address the last part... Psychedelics have definitely fucked some people's lives up. You don't have to be an irresponsible kid to get dp/dr/Hppd/temporary psychosis/etc. and don't get me wrong, I think they're fairly safe... But that comment wasn't very "sciency"

Yep I went insane and went to hospital when I was a young teenager on LSD/cannabis. Don't think I was an idiot exactly curiosity killed the cat more likely, just got into a situation where I wrongly believed that the more I took the more I would learn!
If you're going to be a psycho-naught it might happen to you one day too! After all the term itself kind of implies the exploration of unknown, very far out, and maybe even dangerous territory!

The Aztecs and the Greeks had collective tripping sessions. They werent partying though, they tripped the night away and then shared the experiences with each other afterwards. I think a group of friends could trip together and have a therapeutic experience. Ive tripped to have fun and to explore, both are ok with me.

Just because you trip alone to for spiritual purposes doesn't mean you can't do them with friends, if anything trip with them and enlighten them, be the shaman or witch doctor, ask them what believe is the meaning of life is, show them how spiritual these things are.

That's a very cool idea actually! I have a couple friends that I've tripped with that are usually on a very similar page to me and we've had some great times together. I don't really have any friends that I could really "show the path" with, but that'd be a very cool experiment!

One can be both a psychonaut and a funtripper. I dont see how those can be separated. isnt the exploration the fun part? learning something new every time?
The personal discovery and growth is fun.
and who doesnt learn something new after every "lighthearted" trip

I agree. Personally, I never had much of a hard time with spirituality so anymore I would rather be sober when doing/thinking spiritual. I don't need drugs to help with my spirituality. I just love the effects of psychedelics and the doses of enlightenment that they seem to give me
I feel that if someone only takes them alone and in a certain environment, they are definitely missing out on something big. And likewise. But if that is what they prefer then that is how they should trip. I just think back to some of the best time I have ever had in my life and I was tripping with a close friend or two in the mountains etc. Tripping alone in a formal way is mind blowing, for sure. But I have just had the most amazing times ever with a close friend. Nights that I will NEVER forget. As long as people trip how they want, that is cool. I just hope people aren't avoiding social/new environments solely for like spiritual of discipline reasons. There can just be so much to gain from tripping with a close friend. You can make intense bonds and it's incredible. Always trip how you wanna trip though ! anything else don't dun make no sense. Psychedelic drugs are just to awesome, full of awe and special to restrain them 1 and only 1 application
But if you have explored all the aspects of the psychedelic experience that you feel is necessary then by all means, spend your trips however you feel will benefit you the most.

I also find that diversity of environment, of mindset, and of substance provide me with a wider set of experiences. it has helped me learn more than ever could have alone in one place. Even tripping alone in other places provides so much insight. Also, tripping with one other person who you know very well and are very comfortable with is great. you can bounce ideas off of them and evolve them rather than simply moving onto something tangential.
But hey, trip how you want. i certainly do

What supports this particular claim, or any other "intended" application of natural substances?
Don't get me wrong, I relate to a lot of what you're saying, and also as a scientist, I went through much the same process long ago, and have used them very productively over the years, as well as more regularly in recent years expressly for writing.
But there are no instructions etched on the spores other than "grow and propagate" and there's no purpose, explicit or implied, that ANYBODY can derive from examining the effects they have on humans.
Tolerance is the watchword, and acceptance.

I'm definitely a psychonaut. Something about tripping just attracts me, and I can't describe it. It's just exploring a completely new realm, for a little, and then forgetting everything you discovered until you return once more.

I'm not a psychonaut, probably because I'm not 16 anymore and have gotten over the whole psychedelic exploring our minds maaaaannnn concept.
Now I'm just an adult who likes to get weird a few times a year.

drugs in general to me are for learning and pleasure. And I don't mean feeling good and then crashing, I mean literally boosting your mood and ego for days after. Thats what psychedelics do, and nowadays I don't even fuck with molly or pills because of the comedowns.

If psychedelics boosted ego for days after they wouldn't be very fun, ego makes you miserable and everyone around you miserable if it gets too strong
there is no defined way they work, they work differently for everybody
usually they dissolve ego a bit I think, but for a few people they work opposite, because they go into the experience expecting to gain the ultimate knowledge of the universe ?
