Wet mycelium or Contamination? Odd looking growth *Pics*
    #18837595 - 09/13/13 04:20 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I dont know if this is the right forum since it may not be a contamination..

I made this experimental cake a few weeks ago. It was a normal PF recipe except I added a whole bunch of Hermit Crab Food to the mix. Thats right, hermit crab food. My hermit crabs all died and I had just bought food for them so I wanted to utilize it somehow and I dunno, it ended up in a mushroom cake recipe..

Heres the info on the hermit crab food if anyone cares:

Ingredients:
Fish meal, barley, white wheat, red wheat, rye, oats, coconut, calcium carbonate, salt, wheat flour high gluten, spirulina, pre-gelatinized starch, fish oil, brewer's dried yeast, lecithin, carrot powder, krill meal, green pea powder, fish roe, propylene glycol, spinach, biored, zucchini, alfalfa, brine shrimp, sunflower, glucono delta lactone, beet powder, garlic, romaine lettuce, earthworm, immustin, zeolite, haematococcus, squid meal, sodium bisulfate, kale, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), choline chloride, a-tocopheryl acetate (source of vitamin E), niacin, d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, thiamine, biotin, pyridoxine HCl, folic acid, d-activated animal sterol (source of vitamin D3), menadoine sodium bisulfate complex (source of vitamin K3), inositol, vitamin B12 supplement, monocalcium phosphate, zinc proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, copper proteinate, iron proteinate, l-ascorbic acid, red 40, yellow 5, blue 2, ethoxyquin (preservative).

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude protein (min.) 19%, crude fat (min.) 10%, crude fiber (max.) 4%, moisture (max.) 10%, ash (max.) 13%.

So its been about 1-2 weeks since inoculation with a ms syringe of the redspore strain. I didnt mark the jars with a date for some reason. I started noticing this weird growth that looks like waterlogged mycelium, or like jelly mycelium. Ive never seen it before. Its even growing up the moisture on the side of the jar off of the substrate!
Look!

Some closer shots.

Heres a pic of some deffinate mycelium in the exact same jar for comparison.

Anyone know if this is mycelium or a contamination? Ive never seen this before. My cakes are 60% colonized and not showing any sign of contamination except this weird looking stuff. Theyre held at a constant 80f and were sterilized in a PC for 90 minutes. Im using a polyfill filter for my inoculation point.

Whats the verdict shroomery? Mycelium or contamination!?

Weird. Hard to tell. It could be water logged mycelium.

Is there a smell?

I cant tell if there is a smell. Nothing strong enough to make it through the GE holes anyway.

Which are your average holes on a PF style lid, 4 holes for 4 inoc points. I stopped using a dry verm layer and started using tyvek then polyfill under the metal lid. So my GE is through 4 16gauge needle holes in tyvek, and filtered through polyfill. Ive been using lids like this for a month now with zero GE problems. Ive even used plastic screw on containers with no modified lids. Just unscrew, open a crack, inoc, and screw up real tight. I can colonize a 450ml plastic jar in 3 weeks with absolutely zero GE the entire time. So I dont really think GE is my problem.

It isnt growing like this on the entire cake. Only along the glass where there is extra moisture along the top and edges of the cake.
