Alrighty , with being in the lone star state takes quite some time to get those cold nights . I have had plenty of beds full of beautiful flowers ; just no where near as large as I'd like ( because how late in the season I have to germ seeds) . I have seen a bunch of trick to germinating poppie seeds , used a few aswell . But after reading couple articles an whatnot ..want to know you guys opinion on putting bunch of seeds in an ice tray freezing the seeds in an ice cube . And with tht I can throw them out on a cool night,; ice cube melts keeping temps low, melting ice spreading seeds a lil & lightly watering .?? Any feedback would be awesome .. You guys have a great day Peace out

I dig the idea, wouldn't be able to say it was effective or not though. Try a few different methods in a few different beds perhaps.

GLH,I don't mean to stomp on your thread but I'm curious to know if poppies have a photo period. I would like to start mine soon as well and could probably pull a grow off now if it suits the plants.

I live in Texas and I just throw handfuls of seeds onto bare soil in November. This method might be more wasteful, but poppy seeds are cheap and it has never failed me. You may have to water them come Spring if the clouds are holding out. I don't tend to my patches usually. They're fucking weeds. The poppies come back every year, too, if you let the pods dry out and release their seed.

Ive always just broadcasted them in early november and come spring they pop out of the ground en masse. This is also in a region much further north than texas but i would assume you could just spread your seeds a little later in the winter.

never done anything special other than prepping the soil a little and throwing seeds onto. seeds are cheap. health food stores sell bulk at nothing that having low germination rate would effect. every gosh darn seed seem to germinate.
