Giving my injured dog weed? 1
#18835531 - 09/13/13 03:08 AM (10 years, 4 months ago) |

My dog jazzy hurt her back leg 4 weeks ago, for a while we let it be. Although she is a very hyper-active dog and loves to fetch and run a lot.We stopped throwing the ball for her though because she keeps hurting herself from running and being playful.
She is staying at my parents house and they have her on some kind of sedative muscle relaxant that is also prescribed to humans. She has been on it for the last 2 weeks and it seemed to be working but they took her off the puppy pain pills and she re-injured herself according to my folks.
I don't feel like the medication is really helping all that much. To me it seems it just makes her not feel hurt and sedated which makes her more likely to hurt herself again, because she can't feel pain as much.
So when i went over to my parent's I almost brought up possibly using a little pot tincture. I feel it would make her more sedated and she wouldn't feel as in pain, however she would still feel her body being strained if she hurt her leg again. on top of that she wouldn't have to take narcotics.
I really just want her leg to mend , and am wondering if anyone has links, studies, or personal experiences related to giving dogs weed, specifically but not inhibited to, medicinal use.

Bad idea. Dogs dont like weed. Trust me, I tried it before. She'll get quite confused and maybe even agressive. The best thing to do is take her back to the vet and let them decide what is best for her.
If the dog is hurt bad it's either surgery of euthanasia. The last thing you want is let the poor thing suffer that it has to. Giving her weed is not the way to go.

Dude stfu, not cool.
Imagine, I break your fucking leg with a crowbar then I force you eat a bunch of weed. You would not feel very good. Most likely you would hurt more. Racing heart and dizziness would be 100x stronger for a dog.
Don't do it dude. Get your folks to take her to the vet again.

Well, if somehow I hurt myself and someone gave me treats with a little bit of herb in em I would probably prefer that over just having the injury.I understand That doesn't necessarily go for my dog though.
No drugs is probably better, but they already have her on some stuff. IT makes her dizzy and sedated as well. I just worry its bad for her, even though the vet prescribed it. Doctors prescribe pharmaceuticals. That's just how it works and a lot of the time they can end up harming the patient. I just thought weed could be less benign.
Too add, one time i was making ganja cookies, and i accidently spilled a little butter on the floor. Before i could do anything my dog had jumped on it and was licking it up. I stopped her and cleaned the rest up. She seemed relaxed and slower in the way she moved.
I'm not about to just go giving my dog a bunch of weed, I'm just considering making her a tincture at a responsible dose.

What you consider a resonanle dose may be way too much for a dog. How bad is her injury? Does she limp bad?
I wouldn't do it if I were you. Take the damn dog back to the vet. They know what is best for her. By the way, your opinion of the medication they gave the dog is irrelevant. These people know what they're doing. They're not giving her some new experimental antidepressant here. It's probably some very generic and common pain killer and probably safer for the dog that weed.

I use to smoke my uncles dog out all the time and he loved it. Infact, everytime I started smoking he would come sit right next to me. Just blow a couple hits in their face, once they start becoming lethargic, see how they react to it. Don't force an insane amount for their first time, if they like it, they will be sure to let you know.

Dogs have different brain chemistry and they don't just get high like a human.
If your dog is hurt take her to the vet.

When it comes to this, I have to agree.
attempting to get your dog high at another time would more appropriate, dont let your dog suffer, get the animal to the vet.
Talking on here is a waste time, seek out medical attention for your animal ASAP.
A pain pill would suffice much better then "guessing" whether or not the weed is helping.

Saying dogs don't like weed is fucking stupid. Maybe YOUR dog doesn't like weed, but that doesn't mean every fucking dog in the world is the same as yours.
OP, take your dog to the vet

If he enjoys getting stoned, get him stoned, if he doesn't - don't.
But first thing is first, take care of your dog and get him some real pain meds.

Why would someone get rid of man's best friend to get a stupid fucking cat, who as a species are just plotting to kill the human race off..?
I echo the sentiments of taking it to the vet. They're better equipped to decide how serious the injury is.

This....... Gotlib, I am not sure how many dogs you have talked to, however, experience tells me most mammals enjoy cannabis, regardless of naysayers. I had a lab that would follow me to my garden and promptly consume any and all dropped or trimmed plant matter. I've seen rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, goats, horses, cattle, deer, elk.... All eat cannabis, lets try and not spread misinformation. I think there may be an ethics issue with giving an animal an intoxicant, however, I'm pretty sure they enjoy it, and enjoy the medical effects as well. Be well :-)

I known a few dogs that love weed. I know a bull that would get pissed off and break the fence if we didn't share with him when smoking on my friends farm. There was this horse that would stamp its hoof impatiently if we didn't blow a hit its way/

I know people say their dogs love weed but I have to wonder if the dogs actually just love the attention they get from their owners when they're smoking. Maybe some dogs really do like it. I don't know. I don't think it is ethical to force a dog to inhale smoke.

My dog loves to get baked like a cake with me, but she makes it known when she's had enough or wants more.
I wouldn't give a dog any edibles. Just smoking a dog out is more than enough. I don't know your dog, but if she's anything like my dog she'll let you know if she likes it or not. Last thing I would do is force it on her while she is injured. Especially when she doesn't feel good it's not a good idea to experiment with this kind of thing if you ask me. Usually when my dog doesn't feel good she doesn't even want to look at cannabis.

Dogs are much survival focused than humans, who often stray in art and recreation. A marijuana high, would be too uncomfortable for a dog. Try some opiates instead or some specifically designated medicine. Marijuana is way too variable in that regard. For me, it makes the pain more noticeable,as it does all other things.
I read somewhere that dogs have a much more concrete view on reality and the need to alter their conciousness is not only not necessary, but also unwanted. Try to comfort it with company.

Nope, just seeing what people thought. I don't think I'm going to, but i think it's funny how against it people are. I doubt it's that bad for a dog, comparatively to pharmaceutical drugs.

how did this all go down?
Thanks for asking dude!!!
My dog is actually doing fine! I never gave her any marijuana and she is off the puppy pain pill things and hasn't injured herself since. So all is well!
My friend who is without home is crashing at my house right now and he has a beautiful blue nose pit bull named lucy! She is the single most nicest pit bull I have ever met. She was even cautious and respectful to the disabled cat that lives here!
Pit bull can be awesome, fuck what the media says. It's like saying black people rape white women...basically it's fuckin bullshit and it depends on person to person.
I even fed the pit bull some of my homemade chili mixed with some apples. We don't have any dog food around so I looked up whats good for dogs to eat and pretty much everything in my chili is great!
