mixing brown and white rice flour
    #18835394 - 09/13/13 01:42 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Thinking of mixing brown and white rice flour some day
I have the Organic Brown flour and imported from India white flour

I read in the past that its important that the flour be organic
the white flour has no such certification. What would happen?

Ive read in the past uncle bens brown rice makes mushrooms impotent

What are your thoughts on this

Unfortunately, there's as much bullshit posted here as real info. Mushrooms don't care about the name of the farm or processor who prepared the rice.

Use brown rice, not white rice.  The mycelium wants to consume the outer layer, not the starch within. White rice has had this outer layer of bran stripped off to help humans develop larger hemorrhoids.

Sounds kinda sketchy, OP.  I would listen to the advice of RR (not on hemorrhoids) on this one and just stick with the brown rice flour.  This is proven TEK that you can rely upon to produce good results - maybe...

The reason why shrooms like brown rice flour is because of the carbs. You'd be better off using something else high in carbs. There are other things in brown rice flour that shrooms like. Try increasing vitamin B's, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B9...

Anyone else get a bingo?

Just use brown rice. If it isn't broken then don't fix it

There's plenty of carbs in white rice too. The mycellium likes the husks. Both of the rices have about 45g of carbs per cup.

RR

Makes me wonder though would rice bran work as well or better than brf, or does the stabilization process do something to it?

RR has posted many times about the high quality of bran. BRF is generally promoted because it's cheap and easily available.

I think commercial growers use bran. I think most of the nutrients are in the bran and the center is mostly starch.

Type "bran" and search only rogerrabbit in the search feature. He's posted tons of stuff about it.

Simple research. Do you know why shrooms like Coco Coir? I do, but I don't know why you doubt me. I also don't know why none of you use thing in substrate that shrooms would like more. Like Coco Coir with brown rice flour and manure. It would only make sense because mushrooms feed on nutrients.

BRF in bulk substrate. That's brilliant if you want to see emerald green.

Isn't that a bit closed minded. Why not find a why to fix the problem rather then dismiss it?

I'll try to fix it. A top layer of vermiculite would add more protection because it has no nutrients on its own. This method is popular with websites that sell pre-pressure cooked substrate.

Because you can get as good or better performance from a substrate that resists contams rather than is prone to it. Also a top layer of vermiculite is not necessary and now you're just finding ways to make a wrong right. And then pre-steralized substrate from websites do it? Imagine that, those kits are recommended by no one ever.
