I put some germinated seeds in seedling soil, they grew for a while the after the first leaflet they stopped, while the seed i gave my friend continued to flourish. I added some compost to the soil in a 1:1 ratio and then they started growing nicely again for a week and then suddenly just died?? I'm think the roots got burned.
Can anyone give me advice for a nice soil mix for mimosa hostilis?

Have you fed them any nutrients? Try an organic all purpose fertilizer and start with half the amount of the directions and see how the plants react

Also make sure you are not over watering them

Mimosa seedlings can get rootrot fairly easy. Ive had great success growing them in premixed cactus/citrus soil

Have have lost seedlings to too much water and mildew/mold
Well draining soil is good... Till they get a bit bigger and can take regular soil mix

Mimosa hostilis likes sandy soil. Scarification can assist you with growing them. There's a couple of methods you can use. You can nick the seeds with a sharp knife, box cutter etc and leave them to soak in water for 24 hours. You can also boil the kettle and dump the seeds into a glass with the boiling water and leave them for 24 hours before planting. These methods work well for acacia seeds too.
It's also best to keep to germinate the seeds when the temperature is 25 degrees C. A heat mat or heated propagation chamber can help with this. The other important thing is light. Fluorescent grow lights are cheap and easy to use for germinating seeds and striking cuttings.
A store bought cacti and succulent mix should work well. It'll be pasteurised too which will give your seeds a better chance.

thanks for the info just another question or two.
now that you mention cacti mix, i think i may have overwatered them. i luckily have cacti mix. will this work without extra fertilizer or compost? and my friend put the his seedlings from the seeds i gave him in a humidity chamber, they are growing very nicely. is this a good idea?
thanks

I'm not sure if I get your first question about fertiliser and compost. You still need to fertilise the plant so it gets essential nutrients. When I plant my seeds I mist the soil with fertiliser until it's moist.
Humidity/propagation chambers are great and I use them for all of my seeds and cuttings. I have a heated propagation chamber and some that aren't heated. I can make cuttings all year round in the heated propagation chamber which is great. When I use the non heated chambers then I normally have to wait until the warmer weather arrives. You can use them inside a warm room though if the temps are good enough. The propagation chamber helps keep the soil moist, warm and if you have them outside then it'll protect your seedlings from snails, strong winds etc. If you have them outside then make sure the plants don't cook if it's Summer time.
You can also use a plastic storage tub for propagating cuttings. This will also keep the cuttings warm, protected and in high humidity. I've seen someone use a big white plastic bucket with plastic wrap over the top for B. caapi cuttings.
I can highly recommend heated propagation chambers and fluorescent grow lights. You'll have great success and you'll be able to germinate and strike cuttings all year round. Check Ebay for good deals.

No need for humidity chambers. m.tenuiflora like our south african sun.

I use basic potting soil mix with some perlite. Giving them nitrogen rich ferts every three weeks.
The plant in the pic above is roughly three weeks old. I've only lost 2 out of 20 plants and that was me due to snapping the tap root.
My germination method is to soak the seeds in boiled water and keep resoaking until i see them puffed up. 100% germination rate.
More recent pic of my seedlings

I disagree, M.Tenuiflora prefers sun and a lot of it using artificial light will just promote spindly growth.

So, after all my failed attempts i settled on a soil mix of 2:1 cacti mix:normal potting mix and added some orchid fertilizer.
Here are the results of 3-4 weeks

Any comments?
Oh and.. I live in the perfect climate to grow mimosa hostilis outdoors.
When will be the best time to transplant it?
Do any of you have pics of YOUR big mimosa.?

My mimosa is about a year old and I am attempting to grow it as a bonsai. Not the best picture since you can't see the entire plant.

@ TheFourthEyE Sweet! that is about the same size as mine... I already have mine in a 3 gallon airpot, ready for it's takeoff. I have come to respect and rely on airpots within the last year. They are a bit pricey but in my opinion, well worth it. Most of my "important" plants are in one.
@moderm That is one hell of a sexy plant. Gives me high hopes of what's to come. Thanks for sharing!

Do you think it would of been even bigger of not trying to bonsai it?

Im not familiar with airpots. Do you mind explaining what that is and what benefits it holds for the plant?

It would definably be much larger if I didn't trim the roots and keep in a small pot. I was growing another at the same time and it was over a foot tall in less than 1 month. The bigger/deeper the pot the better.
