Hey all, Im going to construct a terrarium with the intent of it being almost fully self automated. I have a micro controller which will periodically turn on a fan every few hours. I also got a humidity sensor which I will use to turn on and off my humidifier. The humidifier I have is a cheap, ultra sonic one which is intended for decorative use. I plan to have the humidifier in a large container filled with water (with a small fan to push the air to the terrarium) connected to an empty coke bottle and then to the terrarium. Just like method 3 of http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml#Terrarium.
Do I still need to mist the mushrooms so that evaporation on the pinns/mycelium can happen to promote fruiting ?
Also if you guys know of a better way to use the humidifier feel free to share This is what I have: I know it sucks but if its unusable maybe I can buy a better one. http://dx.com/p/12-led-multi-colored-light-aquarium-ultrasonic-mist-maker-humidifier-110623

That humidifier will create a lot of heat and you run the risk of flooding the chamber. Build a SGFC instead.

Humidifiers and fans are not needed unless building a greenhouse....
And if you want full automation I would either recommend set and forget monotubs or a greenhouse, not just a tub with humidity pumped in....
A fan is only going to dry out the substrate, and a humidifier is going to over saturate them....

No, you need to fan out the chamber after misting in order to promote evaporation.
So unless you can set up the fan to kick on right after the humidifier, and then kick off 30 seconds later, it is not going to work that well.
Bottom line, if growing cakes, go with a SGFC....
If going bulk, do set and forget monotubs....
Neither of these setups require humidifiers or fans....but the SGFC does require manual misting/fanning at least 2 times a day.
