    #18834191 - 09/12/13 08:26 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
At base of dead tree, non-conifer, likely an old dead oak.

Gills:
Peachy/white, fused to stem

Stem:
Hollow and thin, gills travel down them.

Cap:
rusty brown to tan, slightly conical.

Spore print color:
White or bone/really light tan

Bruising:
Tan to brown

Other information:
Strong scent, kinda sweet. Some have worms feasting upon older caps/stems. Attracts sweat bees.

I'd say Armillaria. Just make sure you thoroughly cook em before consumption.

And try just a little bit first to make sure they agree with you.

they do look like Armillaria tabescens, but your gill shots (the important part) aren't the best...

the gills should be subdecurrent and whitish to pinkish-brown and they should give you cream colored spore prints... make sure you get some.

Cook them very thoroughly, too... longer than you'd cook most mushrooms. Many folks get stomach discomfort from these species.

Thanks for the responses! Well, felt I should check first well before I consider it even a little. Sounds as though palatability is questionable even if Armillaria.

subdecurrent gills, yes, and older mushrooms have pinkish-brown gills while younger is more cream. Spore print I described I believe as "bone" but I think "cream" would be more proper.

Nice thread, I feel like I'm almost there, with all that identification information+pics

even remembered a sporeprint :-)

can't help though, but stammet has some good books (/maybe get a field guide book/hunters book - then you would have a good guess at a mushroom it could be, but sounds like you have?)

your gill pictures aren't too good, you should get a good pocket camera that can take macro shots (ixus 500, 750 are very good cameras(better than most pocket cameras) and only $40 used, take crisp pictures in any condition almost - often better than ixus 9xx series that cost $400 from new, I know since I used to repair all 3 types+collect them)

google images armillaria  - will have plenty of pictures to compare for quick comparision

one day I'm buying a microscope to be able to make final identification from sporeprint+spores

peace
