tl;dr: Is it possible to have a bacteria contamination that does not smell?
Hello Shroomery,
I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but unfortunately it's not an option for me at this time.
I've recently started over with this hobby from scratch. I noticed that the community seemed to favor WBS so I decided to give it a try. Every time I'd cook it, it'd either burn or not be done. I couldn't seem to find the sweet spot. I ended up having to hand dry my spawn batch of WBS, and I thought I got it dry enough. Looking back, I didn't. I believe this is the source of my bacteria contamination.
My current setup: Using potentially bacteria contaminated WBS master spawn jars and G2Ging to properly prepared Rye Grain. I use Franks TiT incubator; it averages around 82*.
Here is a quick description of my contamination:
My jars will colonize to 100%; however, when I do a test shake and let them settle before a G2G, they show little growth after two days. Some of the smaller WBS grains do not colonize at all. When I G2G them, I see condensation forming, and some of the Rye Grains appear to be "Washed Off" (IE: completely clean, wet and shiny.) They were dry before the G2G.
The weird thing is that all I smell is mushrooms.
Is it possible for a bacteria contaminated jar to smell normal? Am I being paranoid? I've already decided not to use them, and I have a fresh batch of spawn jars growing right now. Just looking to expand my knowledge.
Thanks,
CP

I guess it could be possible. If you're not seeing growth I would imagine it is bacteria. I don't use TiTs because room temp is A-OK, I dont care about the extra 2 or 3 days I get on my jar, not worth the possible malfunctions.
Also, are you doing your G2G in a SAB or with a flow hood?
How are you prepping your slave jars?

It appears some of your grains are contaminated with bacteria, but if you smell mushrooms then some also must not be contaminated.
You can try to spawn them to a bulk substrate and hope for the best. Bacteria generally isn't a problem in the bulk stage, but watch closely for green because sometimes grains which have been colonized by bacteria often give way to molds later. RR
