micropore tape AND al foil? or one or the other?

for pf tek, is it a good idea to use m.p. tape and al foil or should i just do either or? i am doing the vermiculite barriers for all.
i've heard both ways suggested, and that choosing either or allows better air flow.

Foil is for steam sterilization. to prevent excess moisture from getting in.
micro pore tape is optional, as your dry verm layer is effectively a barrier against contaminants.
removing the foil after sterilization allows for proper gas exchange.

I just put masking tape over the holes on my jars and covered with foil for the steaming. After steaming I took the foil off.
After Inoculation and punching through the masking tape, I just left the jars as is. No contamination problems.

Micropore isn't guaranteed to stop contamination. It says right on the product info page on the website. Can it stop some contamination? Of course, people were using micropore awhile back with a few issues, but a lot of success was had. But, 10-15 years ago people were saying that coffee filters worked (they don't) so . I wouldn't use micropore for grain jars, because when I did I had a *lot* more contam problems before switching to Tyvek.

You only keep the foil on to keep the water out while sterilizing. If you have a decent dry verm layer you won't need micropore tape over your holes.

Exactly what I did when doing pf tek. Worked great for me as well

The only time I could see the masking tape being a problem is if you were PCing the jars.
Then it would possibly create a vacuum inside the jars.
Other than that, if removed right after steaming, it should not be a problem.

For best results, use both micropore tape and foil as they're for separate reasons. The foil keeps water that drips off the lid of the pot from getting into the jars. The micropore tape helps to prevent contaminants entering the jars after sterilization and before inoculation. Always remove the foil as soon as the jars are removed from the sterilizer. RR

How good is micropore at actually blocking contams?

stonesun said: Well I didn't measure the the pore sizes, instead took a piece of tape and mounted it on a slide. Hydrated some P. cubensis spores and with an inoculation loop mounted them on the tape. The gaps are huge comparing to cubensis spores, which are ~12-17µm. I circled the fibers with individual spores sticked to them. Sorry for the kinda crappy images, didn't put a whole lotta effort in it...

Yes. Fibers in filters are always smaller than the organisms they filter. That's why they're woven thick so air can pass through while trapping the undesired particles. The micropore tape is an extra precaution in addition to the vermiculite filter. It's not a replacement. Use both for best results. RR

You would agree that they are not a suitable filter for grain jars, correct?

No, micropore tape is not good for grain jars.
Use synthetic filter disks.
