Refrigeration of grain jars.

I went overboard with grain since it's so flipping easy to make gallons of grain spawn. Any way I know that you can put a jar in the fridge for a week or two if you're not quite ready to use it. But if my fridge is full(of home brews) could I put the jar in the freezer with no ill effects?

Might want to use that grain to inoculate an outdoor bed if possible.

Lol. First world problems.
Just put 'em in the coolest place in your house. There've been reports (here) about delayed fruiting cycles and other strange effects from overly-long consolidation periods - but I've never noticed the difference.
Alternatively, you can take a few of the extras and set 'em up to fruit invitro if you're not doing anything else with them. You'll get reduced yields (compared to bulk), but at least you'll get something out of the jars, and it takes close to 0 work to set up!

Are these jars PC'd already? If so, refrigeration isn't really required before use if you aren't going to inoculate them right away. Just leave the foil on top to retain moisture. I've left PCd jars uninoculated & unrefridgerated for months without issue.
Don't freeze hydrated grains. When the moisture expands as it freezes it will probably rupture the grains.
Now, if you are talking about semi prepped grains that have been hydrated but haven't yet been PC'd, then refrigeration is an option but still don't freeze them. If you leave them out at room temp the green bastard and his friends will run rampant through the jars. However, you can then shake em up and break up the clumps colonized by the bastards and PC the shit out of em for 120 mins and you can use them just like normal. But I would try to avoid that and PC the jars now if you can.
Or you talking colonized spawn?

Actually working brewery tours and brewing beer at work and at home IS the number on thing I would recommend to any straight male friends of mine.

I'm going to look up in-vitro grains. Yield is hardly an issue any more I make so much more than I would ever use. It's really just fun now.

I would but I live in the Midwest and tonight's temperatures are between 35-45 estimated. Summer is done.

RogerRabbit said: They're easy to get out of the jar. Simply bang it against a tire to break up the grains and then pour it out into a bowl. Separate the fruits from the rye. I'd suggest hydrating in coffee, and at full colonization, remove the lid, and replace it with just the ring and filter. This will allow more air exchange, leading to pinning. RR
I found this gem. Any one know if RR means using coffee during the grain prep hydration or dunking the grains with coffee water like Frank's grain dunk.
Speaking of grain dunk. For a good in-vitro rye tek do you think a grain dunk and then replacing the lid with a filter only would be a worthwhile idea?

The problem is I have too many finished colonized jars. I said spawn in the OP but I guess it's not mega-clear.

It's just a week or two until you can use the spawn? I'd just leave it. I've left fully colonized jars for way longer than a couple of weeks and they still did fine when spawned to bulk. Even the ones that pinned in vitro -- I just mixed the pins into the bulk substrate along with the grains.

If summer is over, and is only 35-45º then why are you worried about refrigeration? You could put your spawn in the coldest Place in your house or garage and achieve refrigeration. A car trunk would work. Not saying that would be an ideal place...
