Entomopathogenic Fungi
    #18825471 - 09/10/13 09:32 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

anyone know of anyone who's had any success growing a non-sporulating culture of an entomopathogenic fungi? ol' paul stamets claims to have sorted out his carpenter ant(camponotus modoc) problem with metarhyzium anisopliae but i'm curious to see if anyone else has done the same or similar. the type of termite i want to control is called cryptotermes primus, or white ant, and is an australian native as far as i can tell.

have you found any white ants growing fungi out their bodies? i think the best chance at success is using the proper fungi which has adapted to the species of termite you want to control.

When Stamets did the experiment it sounded like he took many many transfers of the fungi until he found a sector that was not sporulating as quickly as the others. eventually it did sporulate which is important because the spores act as an ant repellent.

yep, i agree with how you theorise of stamets did it, as tedious as it sounds i'm willing to give that method a try. as for the already infected termites: man if i could find them i probably would have. apparently i need to find the termites graveyard but considering these little bastards are like 3mm long by 1.5mm and live in hardwood...i hate them.

maybe there is a mycological society in your area that has stored a sample of the right termite with a cordyceps mushroom growing from it? Maybe a museum? maybe someone, somewhere...
