More research urgently needed on caffeine

Studies have shown that caffeine users can become dependent on or addicted to caffeine and may have difficulty reducing their consumption, as can occur with other drugs of dependence. A comprehensive review of the current evidence on caffeine dependence is presented in an article in Journal of Caffeine Research, a peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available on the Journal of Caffeine Research website.
Steven Meredith and Roland Griffiths, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore, MD), Laura Juliano, American University (Washington, DC), and John Hughes, University of Vermont (Burlington), reviewed the published research on caffeine dependence. In the article "Caffeine Use Disorder: A Comprehensive Review and Research Agenda" they describe the prevalence of caffeine dependence, clinically relevant indicators of functional impairment among caffeine users, and the criteria for making a diagnosis of caffeine use disorder.
The authors propose an agenda for future research that would include clinical, epidemiologic, and genetic investigations to lead to a better understanding of the clinical signs and the prevalence of caffeine dependence, as well as the risk factors and best approaches for treating caffeine addiction.
"Caffeine-related problems are increasingly being seen as clinically important by addiction professionals," says Jack E. James, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Caffeine Research. "The article by Dr. Steven Meredith and colleagues is timely in helping to clarify the dimensions of caffeine dependence problems, while also providing direction for future research in this neglected area."

I have been addicted to coffee since I was in like 1st grade. Yes I am not lying! It was very normal for everyone to drink coffee in my family. I'm originally from New York where my grandparents and parents grew up in an Italian culture. Though I am not even Italian. After dinner it was normal to drink coffee, mornings it was essential.
While I was in school I remember in 6th grade we went on a trip to California and I had insane headaches from not drinking coffee (caffeine withdrawals).. I snuck off and bought a pepsi just for the caffeine. I believe that coffee helped accelerate my learning in grade school! I was so good at math it was freakish. Anyways I got a lot of shit from other people's parents growing up..the kind who only let their kids drink sprite blah blah.. Caffeine is a great substance. I still drink coffee every morning.. I'm actually on my 3rd cup today.. usually drink one but need to study a lot for biophysics test tomorrow..
Only thing that happens when I don't drink it is a MASSIVE HEADACHE! Caffeine is DA SHIT!

I don't feel that I need it to live so I don't drink anything that has caffeine in it on a daily basis (I reckon I probably drink about 3 to 6 cups of tea per year).
Usually I just drink water, it keeps me refreshed and it's better for me than all the other drinks out there which are full of sugar and caffeine. To be honest I'm more concerned about the sugar in those drinks than the caffeine, the sugar content is always ridiculously high, the damage that can do to your teeth shouldn't be ignored (not to mention the fact that sugar isn't known to be good for the human body to digest, particularly not in large doses).

I drink coffee every morning. Sometimes I drink decaf in the afternoon. Today I am drinking a second cup of regular and will be going to bed in awhile. I make my coffee with a heaping tablespoon, sometimes more sometimes less. My cup is usually a large one, prolly 3 actual cups or 4. I can reduce my intake, but why bother when it doesn't cause issues.

I don't drink soda. I get my caffeine from black coffee with a dash of whole milk. no sugar... no bullshit cappuccinos just big scoops of Folgers Coffee! I drink more water than anyone I know! I have a water dispenser in my room (5 gallons) and it's gone within 2-3 days max. It's really weird.. In fact I can't not have water with me..always need it handy.. in fact I need to refill these fucking jugs!

I went at least a decade without going more than a day without my caffeine fix. Quitting wasn't difficult psychologically but I had terrible headaches for two weeks and I was too lethargic to do anything.
Water ftw
