Visually inspect liquid culture for contams?

Is it possible to visually examine a liquid culture for contaminants? i inoculated 3 pint jars of 1tbsp kara light corn syrup with cubensis, alt 7, and cyanescens. I pressure cooked the liquid culture for 30 mins at 15psi. 3 days later im shaking it around and im starting to see some growth. Im fairly certain these are not contaminated, but is there any indicators as to if there is a contamination i should be aware of?

rarely the only sure fire way to see if the Lc is contaminated is test it.

Also, on one of the jars, i didnt manage to clean it out all the way and there is some specks of vermiculite in solution, im assuming these wont be an issue since it has been sterilized?

Most of the time it's not possible to tell if an LC is contaminated by visual inspection. There are some very obvious contaminations possible that will not look like mycelia. Typically shit like mats of shit floating on the top of the jar and odd colors. Also if it's cloudy it's bad. But that said, a contaminated LC can still look healthy to the naked eye. An LC must be tested first to make sure it's OK.

An ELME or any malt based LC will have particulates and 'sediment' that drop out of solution in the PC, so you cant rely on just looking at it. Filtering that out is a waste of time so dont bother. In fact LC's in general are a waste, but if you get a good one, it can prove beneficial. You do have to test an LC to see if its viable. In the end its not a time saver at all.
You can see some contams in a Karo LC, which comes out crystal clear.
This 'tornado' is a bacterial contam in a Karo LC

This is what it should look like, also in a Karo LC

But, as said, you have to test them out to be sure. Most growers shy away from LC and for good reason. Best to start a grain or agar LC, if you want to go the LC route. You know what you got from the start. I still do LC's from time to time just to mix it up a bit and keep in practice. I like the Karo LC's for the clarity, but the growth is slower and not as thick as a ELME LC, which goes off like a bomb. If you do a grain or agar LC, go with the malts and watch it explode.
But, if you have a good agar plate or a good grain jar, go directly to mega grain jars and skip the LC's altogether. LC's become a useless step at that point. They are fun to play around with though, good practice for your sterile procedures.
Peace, FT
