Blue oyster mycellium.....Help please
    #18832467 - 09/12/13 01:25 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So im growing blue oysters....have a gander

If you guys look between the B and the 9 on the jar do you see that gritty looking part of the mycellium? Do you think its an infection, or is it simply the way it colonized on that piece of grain.

This is a better view of the jar.

.......

This is my fear.....

I posted this jar over 10 days ago, and ended up trashing all of them, and isolating a few to observe them. No one in the contamination forum told me if this was contamination or not. I simply assumed it was.

Here is the isolated jar of the same type of incident and how it turned out 10 days later

If you look at the jar the mycellium didnt colonize the infected area as well. There is no sign of the infection BUT the mycellium is thin and wispy around where the infection was. Or that is assuming it WAS an infection. What do you guys think? Does the jar above the line look normal to you? What do you think about these previous jars. These are all Blue oysters

Looks ok to me but I see what your looking at on the final picture.  Did you continue to grow that jar out?  I know you shouldn't do it but I had trich show up in a couple bags of oysters once and let it continue to grow and over take it then spawned it outdoors with success.  I feel like i've seen a white pin like contam before but can't say right off hand.  Are you injecting LC?

I am using LC. The bottom two pictures from my previous attempt at blue oysters made sense to me (in terms of contamination). The filters had gotten wet before, but were also stored in the fridge (a fridge that I share with 6 roommates and it smells like rotting food and crap from time to time  I didnt know until reading some of stamets book that when storing jars in the fridge they should be bagged beforehand to avoid contaminates in the fridge seeping through the filter. Not only that but a WET filter can allow bacteria to pass through the filter and into the jar supposedly. It made sense that those contaminated, so I trashed all the jars.

The top two pictures were redone using whole filter disks (not cut up or inoculated with silicone ports), and I inoculated them in front of a flowhood. I have 9 jars in all and so far none of them are giving me any serious red flags, but this one jar in the above two pictures is kind of making me :strokebeard: <-----

It doesnt look as bad as the LAST infected jars, but I guess time will tell. Kind of just antsy to see what you all thought, and to see what you thought of the previous infection.

Edit:: and no I havnt grown out those infected jars  I could probably try, but as a man without health insurance ill just count the losses and try again

Did the mycelium continue to grow? and fully colonize the jars?

Ya....and its still colonizing (the old jars) Pretty slowly because its outside and colder, but they are growing

I almost feel like I've had this in a jar before and it grew just fine.  I've been waiting for someone to chime in on this.

Dude, you are the mushroom hypochondriac

I'm just messing with ya, but for real - when you're growing oysters and reishi, stop worrying so much about contamination.  Oyster jars, to me, always look like they got trich until I just let them keep growing.  Bacteria is seldom a worry either.   I open air inoculate and have never lost a jar of reishi or oyster spawn.  If I had been like you I probably would have thrown away about 20 or 30, but I didn't, and they all grew fine.

Just let 'em grow out, and if they look infected, spawn 'em anyway.  What's gonna happen?  You lose a couple bucks in straw or wood pellets?  I mean yeah if you see mold, toss that shit, but until then?  No worries!

I wouldn't use that jar for G2G, but otherwise :whathesaid:

Heres the interesting thing. I checked the jars today (the ones outside from previous infection) and they look fine. In fact the patch that was weak where the contams were is shrinking and getting covered by mycellium.

Im confused, I thought mycellium couldnt really defend itself. Does it just over run stuff or what?

It's hard for me to be certain. It's probably not a contaminant at all; sometimes you just get slightly different-textured spots. But oysters are very aggressive, much better at defending themselves than most other cultivated mushrooms, and the appearance there is also consistent with a weak infection that the oyster is beating.

With grain to grain transfers, I find it's best to be paranoid. If there's a one in ten chance that your jar is slightly contaminated, I'd go ahead and spawn it to bulk, but for grain to grain the spawn must be completely pristine, without any reason to suspect contamination.

Ya im looking at my jars tonight all of them and the same thing is kind of going on. Not as bad as the fits batch of (possible) comtams.....but there is some different textured grains and what not, kind of giving that splotchy look =(

Im wondering If I tossed 6 jars that were perfectly fine :strokebeard: my paranoia comes into play when breathing in toxic crap. I dont wanna open some contamed jars that MIGHT be ok.....smell to see if they smell clean, then keep them in my room and grow room while it just festers :paranoid:

Im gonna post some pictures sec

Look! The same thing is happening to this batch. And nothing changed in terms of my lab technique between these jars, and my pheonix oysters that all came out fine.....not one contam. Not to mention my reishi and g2g transfers from my reishi were fine

Is this normal blue oyster growers? can anyone else confirm what im seeing? If its normal why is it only in certain areas of the jar? Its frustrating and mildly scary looking. They say when it doubt, throw it out.....but I might be over thinking this. Not to mention Stamets book says nothing about blue oyster cultivation

Yes, I've had blue oysters frequently look splotchy like that.  That's what I meant by I used to think it was trich.  I bet it will thicken up and look normal soon enough.
