Do these oyster mushrooms seem a little large?
*This is NOT a King Oyster. This is Pearl Oyster mycelium from Fungi Perfecti.

those are some giant oysters!

but i don't understand people keep posting oyster topics in the ''general cultivation'' section in stead of the ''gourmet and medicinal'' , people in the second one will probably appreciate it more...

Yeah you're probably right Forrest. I'm a bit new here. The reason I posted it here (and possibly some other noobs as well) is that this forum is called "General Cultivation," implying that any species would be welcome here. Perhaps if the forum was called "Psilocybin Mushrooms" or "Active Mushrooms" or something like that it would be more clear.

How do I move the thread?

IMO, and I'm not against actives but these should be under mushroom cultivation and the actives under a different title lol but the majority of people are into the actives and alot of ppl even got their start there before moving to gourmets.  But those are some nice fruits!  It'll be interesting to see how the next flushes are and if they continue to do this with all your grows.  I wanted to see if you wanted to make a trade til i saw you lived in russia!  Anyways congrats dude, nicely done

Well, they kind of have (been doing this with different grows). I'm pretty new to all this mushroom growin', but check out this thread:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18775346

I've been experimenting with different bucket setups. I fruited the big oyster like you see it in the photos, by just sliding the lid off the bucket a bit. In that link (with the PE) i put a plastic bag over the bucket and punched a few holes in it (probably a similar FAE). Not ALL of my buckets have resulted in small numbers of large fruits, but I'm wondering if this is more than a coincidence...

Could the environment in the grow room have something to do with this?

this one was just sitting outside on a straw log.  so I don't think it's that unusual.  it's blue oyster.

Beautiful mushroom Drake89! So you say this is fairly common, huh? How often do you get these type of results? Do you know what causes the different sizes of fruits? I was thinking it might be atmospheric, as I've been growing all of my oysters on a cardboard/coffee combo, while experimenting with different types of fruiting conditions. Have you noticed if the logs that have huge fruits have more or less total weight than the small ones?

Thanks Molimo!

Growing the spawn in coffee/verm. I use the same method as the PF cakes, just substituting coffee for BRF. Then, I spawn that into these 3.5 gallon buckets (that I get for free from the bakery at Safeway) into a 50/50 cardboard/coffee combo. I get the coffee for free from Starbucks, and the cardboard (also free) from the dumpster behind CVS. The only thing I pay for is the verm, but I'm now experimenting with using coffee/cardboard for the spawn as well.

Conditions are pretty sub-par to be honest. I've got all of this (both spawn and fruiting buckets) in a spare room. No extra fans or humidifiers or anything. Just a bunch of buckets sitting on the floor. Once the spawn runs through the substrate, I've been simply sliding off the lid of the bucket a little (as you can see in those photos up top). I believe this is too much FAE though, and I'm currently experimenting with a modified mono-tub-bucket setup.

the biggest ones i have seen in the wild were on this really high up branch on a live oak. they were each about 8 inches by 5 inches but still retained that sort of scallop shape although they making very frilly at the end of the stalk causing my friends who introduced me to mushroom hunting to think they were angel wings at first. but they were just really big specimens. we ended up taking a few of the younger specimens and cooking them up. they were delicious

so i made coriander cumin chicken with a cilantro marinade/sauce over rice

then my friend sautéed the oysters in garlic butter with soy and pepper

they were delicious

the ones i have found in the wild since then have been a fraction of the size

you're probably on to something with the yields there.  Big fruits just happen when you don't harvest them on time.  These fruits are already decomposing sort of, at least that's what I think the small hairs on the caps mean.  In contrast when they are harvested at an early stage they are much more edible stem wise, and last for up to a week or more in the fridge.  old ones like this will melt and it's gross.

Man that is a wild looking huge oyster, but I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'm afraid you had better get to the eye doctor soon (unless it's my eyes), because you state that is a blue oyster, drake89, but its brown. Ha just fucking w/u I've got some pearl oyster's that are blue, sometimes, but I think the color has to do with how much light they are getting and other enviromental things like humidity. By the time they mature most of them turn brown on me. and awesome job to the russian, How often do u water those monsters just wondering cause I see no towels down for drainage?
