I think I found a fig tree (seedling?) in my backyard. I'm not sure though. Location: My Cali backyard. I think the neighbor might have thrown a fig and it eventually grew. I don't know how old it is. pics taken a few minutes ago:

Do you guys know if this might be an actual fig tree? I'm excited if so
cheers.

I suck at ID-ing plants but I am pretty sure that you have a fig... It's just that I don't know if there are any look alike plants...

Sure looks like it. I have a very old one in my yard. The fruits are more of a novelty to me, but I dig it. Cool shit man.

Yes, it's a fig. Plants grown from a seed usually don't produce fruit, at least that's the case with the varieties that grow here around the Adriatic. They are reproduced exclusively by offsets. I'm not sure if that's the case with your plant, I guess you'll know in a couple of years.

How long have you lived in this place? The reason I ask is the stump to the right might have been a fig that someone cut down. New fig tree runners will grow of existing trees root systems.

You've got yourself a common fig (Ficus carica). Hard to tell what variety it is without seeing the fruits in combination with the leaves. I'm kind of obsessed with figs. Similarly to cactus, once you get one species or variety, you get hooked, and want to collect as many as you can. I also have a couple different species of Ficus. They grow really fast and strong, especially in a Mediterranean-like climate. Common figs propagate very easily through wood cuttings, but are extremely difficult to get seeds to grow from the fruit. Your tree there is probably an offshoot from your neighbors roots, like a previous poster suggested.

This thread made me decide to look up a house plant/tree my mother was given a few years back. She claimed she thought it was a fig but I wasn't sure.. a quick google search lead me right to it. Ficus benjamina (weeping fig). Thanks guys!

I have lived here for about 8 years in this house, same house where I first grew shrooms. I actually cut the stump on the right side to make sure the fig isn't shaded or crowded. I'm sure the tree next to it was some weird tree that had different leafs from the figgy. Thanks Ernie
@Prismism No way! I love cacti! Now I verrry interested in growing figs now even more Thanks Yeah the climate here kinda like a desert sorta. Zone 8 I believe. That's so cool thanks bud!

Ficus carica will not make viable seeds in the absence of fig wasps. It is safe to say that your fig tree (that is a fig tree, btw) was propagated from a cutting or a runner and will produce fruit.

My fig trees were no more than two feet tall at the beginning of spring and are not well over six feet tall. What varieties of Ficus carica is your favorite and which ones do you have? Are there any other edible species of Ficus?

Ficus carica is the common fig. All of my common fig varieties are parthenocarpic, and will produce fruit without pollination. I currently have only two trees old enough to bare fruit each year- a Celeste, and Black Mission. I have clones from my neighbor's Brown Turkey tree, and cuttings from an Alma variety, Ronde de Bordeaux, Negronne, Emerald Strawberry, and an unknown variety from my girlfriends property. All of which have delicious and unique tasting fruits.
I understand that most Ficus species need a wasp to pollinate their flowers. I have Ficus obliqua or (small leaf fig), Ficus ingens (Red leaved rock fig), Ficus benjamina (weeping fig), and Ficus religiosa (Bodi tree). All grown from seed. All of which will most likely never grow fruits, but I grow them for ornamental bonsai purposes. The religiosas I have grow relatively fast from an extremely tiny seedling.

hmm I think there ARE fig wasps in my area! I looked online they are near my area of California, the central area. I hope my plant produces fruit? Hopefully there are fig wasps for sure around these parts.
