How would you guys feel if Monsanto were to make mushrooms that were resistant to pests....or even other infections and contaminations that happen during colonization ! Think its a possibility?

No, it would pretty hard to improve upon mushrooms.
Plus, mushrooms have a short shelf life, require lots of labor and are healthy (as opposed to mass produced grains).

It's a neat idea. Someone should write to them and suggest it for research. I would be interested in how this would be accomplished.

did you know it is believed that monsanto products are thought to be the main cause for CCD (colony collapse disorder) among honey bees? Did you also know that monsanto also recently obtained control of the the company in leading honey bee research?
For that reason i hope anyone who supports monsanto dies a traumatic death. Shit, some of them already have by using their industrial products.
I'm mad that this thread exists.

Sure, I'm just as mad about the bees. But, not everything they do is driven by evil. For the most part, I don't agree with their business model. However, they have made some helpful advances with their r&d. Maybe I'm just that asshole who considers both sides.

Not to mention they sue farmers for growing "their" plants, when their shitty-ass disgusting HMO seeds were blown onto the farmer's land without their knowledge. Oh, and sneak their nasty GMO crap into almost every food you buy and fight to keep you from knowing this.
Versicolor - you're not an asshole for considering both sides. I'm actually really curious, what helpful advances have they made? I guess I only hear about the bad side of them...

Yeah, their legal department is pretty underhanded. Like I said, for the most part I don't agree with what they do.
Some things such as harmless selective breeding and biotech research has lead to advancements such as pest-resistant and more efficient crops. Which, are needed to keep up with the food demand. They sue people because they don't think it's fair that they put $4 million a day into development, just to have it reproduced and redistributed at will by everyone without reimbursement.
So think about it. If people would put their money and effort into a food garden rather than a lawn, , companies like this wouldn't exist. It kind of annoys me when I hear new-age hippies dissing monsanto, (based on information obtained from facebook), when they don't even grow their own food. At the moment, there's simply too many people to feed to grow everything organically.
Regarding the bees, I would suggest reading this article. It explains, among other things, why monsanto bought the bee research company (beeologics), and what they plan to do with it.

The 'pest-resistance', not unlike 'weed-resistant' claims are proving to be false, as could be expected. Just search 'super pests' or 'super weeds'. Of course, even if resistance was increased, it still means farmers, as well as the environment are tied to using large doses of insecticides and pesticides in order to kill everything around Monsanto's crops - an aspect not understood by most apologists.
I'd be curious to hear your take on efficiency too. There is no shortage of side-by-side studies showing Monsanto crops losing out in drought and yield studies. Even if the Monsanto crops show promise, they don't supercede the potential dangers imo.

There is enough food available to feed everyone on the planet one-and-a-half times. Anyone not receiving food is due to political/distribution/imagination problems, not lack of food growing efficiency. North Americans probably throw enough food into the garbage to feed most of Africa.

Don't worry, with former Monsanto lawyers on the U.S. Supreme Court, Monsanto is not missing out on any coerced economic opportunities.

okay, let me just say that i already feel bad for keeping a closed mind. I have that article open in a new tab and will read it and likely post it to FB when im done.
I had a lot of stuff to say but i deleted it all because it starts to get off topic and i dont want to come off as a new-age hippy and not be able to defend my views because i dont know enough.. but i'll touch on a couple things
Food demand seems questionable to me. more specifically food shortage. I think the food is wasted and poorly allocated and i think its probably Americans that are the biggest slobs in this area. I think that the general standard of food is so fucked up and all fast food should burn to the ground (but i do eat it, like a fat hypocrite).
i think its bullshit monsanto sues farmers who unintentionally grow a monsanto crop.. not just unintentionally, but completely unwillingly. I dont think that monsanto should be able to sue given the natural behavior of plant reproduction. I've seen a documentary where a farmer's life was arguably ruined because a neighboring farm used GMO and some seeds germinated in his fields and couldn't defend himself against monsanto. thats immoral as fuck.
as for the millions of dollars and protecting their patents, that is also bullshit because they damn well know that they cant control where nature takes their seeds and if they cant accept that then they should be in a different line of business or take the reproductive genes out of the seed, or make seedless fucking crops.. we all know farmers reup at monsanto anyways, due to contracts. Okay, okay, that statement is probably full of faults -- i'm just getting excited.
I'll admit that i have an extreme bias against monsanto and that i'm only half as educated as i am biased, and that is unfair. Its my hunch and instincts that fuels the bias. If you have more info in support of, or against monsanto i'm more than willing to check it out.
i have to click submit now before i go crazy.

I'm not saying North America is the main problem. I think the american food system is messed up, but not the main issue. It's pretty impractical to fly food from america to africa in choppers. Creating a cultivar that is able to be grown in hostile conditions, and have better yields, is essential for some countries. And yes, the product from monsanto does have higher yields, probably as a result of selective breeding. If they didn't, why would anyone bother spending a ton on them?

Nope, they can't. But, they can control what farmers use to plant a 5000 hectare field with.

The company also formerly manufactured controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, and recombinant bovine somatotropin.

Yep, that's some pretty nasty shit. Is the entire company evil and corrupt because of the things some of them have done though? Don't get me wrong. I think the reliance on pesticides and herbicides is unfortunate and saddening. I grew a 30x30 vegetable garden this year. It cost me little more than a lawn to maintain, and I've harvested several hundred pounds of amazing food from it.
And the best part? No need for pesticides, herbicides, or GE seed. In such a small space, a few weeds and a few bugs doesn't really affect my yields, and the benefits from planting GE seed is negligible and unnecessary. Thanks to the reliance on mega farms for food however, people are forced to buy into this chemical "insurance" because a few bugs could turn into a multimillion dollar problem.

No no no! You must take the environment into consideration. ccreating a contam resistant fungus can upset the balance of the ecosystem.
A normally non aggressive fungi could become far more aggressive and take over territory previously occupied by local fauna and fungi.
sowing plants can effect the ecosystem, but fungi are the building blocks of the food chain.
In altering the beginning of the food chain, you could alter the chances of survival for other species.

If everyone ate at a lower trophic level meaning more greens, veggies, rice etc and less beef we would be able to feed more people, but as Americans we need our steak and red wine Thats why India and China have such big populations most of there diet is simple carb(rice) and fish not beef and chicken like us. It takes a lot of feed to support cattle...Im not vegetarian but I definitely think it is an interesting point when it comes to food distribution.

It was kind of a joke. I like mushrooms just the way they are.
In reality, it's already done everyday. People have been culturing and isolating efficient strains of fungus as a prominent aspect of cultivation for a long time. The thing is, as soon as the life cycle renews, all changes are erased. I doubt fungi will be worked by the biotech companies anytime soon.

I don't like Monsanto. They do a lot of things wrong but so does everybody else so they're not really that special. Eventually Monsanto will go out of business and over time their products will vanish. Maybe not in our lifetime, but eventually. Idk
I planted a garden this year and I'm increasing its size every year until there's not a goddamn Monsanto product for miles. Mostly perennials and trees this year though.

Harmless selective breeding is one thing, but it's when they go a bit further and start genetically modifying our food for pest/chemical/disease resistance that I start to worry about long term effects on our ecosystem as a whole. I mean it's just not natural, and we have absolutely no way of knowing what effects it can have... Aside from the ones we DO know, like worse pests/plant diseases. Start going against nature and throwing off the natural balance of things, and there's going to be problems. Probably more than we realize I really almost think they're more "careless" than "evil". Until I hear what their lawyers do to small time farmers...
