If you let bugs eat the myciia out of a substrate can you reuse it?

I can see why this may not work with a completely spent substrate, at least without nutrient additives, but at least with a non spent sub is there a problem with this? I ask because I through a fully colonized substrate into my compost bin which showed signs of trich. Within about 3 days maggots were crawling all over it and there was maybe 1% of the visible mycilia that previously overtook the substrate left. Other than being maggot infested it looked like some of the best compost I'd ever seen however so I moved it into a sunny spot to allow it to dry out and encourage the maggots to die off/disperse. The maggots as well, I would think, should quickly break down and decompose adding further nutrients to the composted substrate. Anyone see a flaw in this? I'm going to try spawning some jars to it outside once it's no longer crawling and see what happens.

When you are working outside it is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you will get.

Haha, exactly. I'm finding little cubes popping up in various places I didn't spawn anything too, always a nice surprise. I wish I had started growing outside sooner, it's just as much work as indoors, but it's a lot more fun. You can experiment all you want, but when it doesn't work out generally you just end up with some compost and there's no bins to cleanup afterwards.

Absolutely not.

And your reasoning is? You do understand how composting works, right?
edit: To use an analogy as I understand it this would be the equivalent to planting say a pumpkin in some well fertilized/composted soil. You (the maggot(s)) rip out out the pumpkin when it's only 4 weeks old and then you (the mycologist) curse and once that's over replant a pumpkin because it's still in season. I feel this is the same thing. The mycilia did not fully consume the substrate, the maggots ate the mycilia before it could continue to do ao and thus fruit, and thus you're left with the original, albeit slightly modified (for better or worse) compost. As I said, if you have a reason to believe otherwise please share, but blanket answers lacking any logic or reason are not particularly helpful so please keep them to yourself or better yet simply get rid of them.
