Yes, I changed myself, I don't honestly know how I did it exactly. It's a life long process, changing yourself, we're constantly changing BUT I made a major change in these past three years of my life and I think it had a combination to do with the drug culture, jail, drugs, and girls. One day everything just came together, I became motivated, eager to learn, productive, I don't know what snapped. I became a huge adrenaline junkie, a man of action, a man that lived in the moment. I love who I am, of course I'm also a chameleon now, I can be nearly anyone but my favorite person to be is me.

Can I change myself? What a question to ask me on a night like this, where I am in a disarray trying to distinguish what is recreational drugs use and what is dependence on getting fucked up. Can I or should I? The difference between these two is drastic. A simple answer to your question would be yes. Of course, anything can change. However, the real question is should you? You sound like you really want to be different, you sound like you really want a better life but lack the motivation to put yourself wherever it is that you imagine is better. Like TeamKiller said, will it really be better? More importantly, will this magically different life you speak of make you happier? I don't have a fucking clue, personally, but your struggle is better understood by me than it might be by any. On second thought, there is a more than likely a huge percentage of the members here who truly desire something but lack the industry and persistence to make it happen.
To further divulge, I've had a huge list of things around me hanging over my head for the past months that hasn't gotten accomplished. At first my reaction was to blame the drugs (namely weed) for the accomplishment. If I wouldn't have chosen to smoke weed, maybe I would have gotten something accomplished. Alas, the true answer to your question is simple: Just do it.
Whatever you want to see happen, whatever you would like to change in your life, just do it. Don't set up any barriers, learn to persevere. More importantly, truly learn to master self discipline. It isn't something that is a given talent; even the marines you spoke about in your OP had to learn and improve their self-discipline to accomplish the tasks at hand. Not that I am special or make any kind of difference, hold any weight, or am any bearing in your life, your post has encouraged me to do what has been made apparent to myself in the past months. It is time to shed my old ways and to change who I am; to be the things I desire most. It will require commitment, persistence and self-discipline, but how rewarding the path must be in hindsight at the finish. Today is the day I change who I am currently to become exactly who I want to be tomorrow.
Your post has changed more than you will ever know. In the future I will put it on my calendar to with my progress. Thank you.

Want an instantaneous can-do attitude? Adderall always makes me feel like im actually worth something and feel like anything is possible. But, you cant take it everyday without its dreadful consequences.
If you want to actually change for the better... you need a life altering experience. Completely change your lifestyle... go somewhere far away. Change your atmosphere.
For example... if I wanted an experience to change my life, I would move to a cabin in the woods in the middle of nowhere and concentrate on the simple things in life. I would stay for a while until i feel it is time to go back and correct the things that are wrong with the life i left behind..

As time goes on it gets boring not liking yourself and u'll chill about it though. Its pretty hard to think that something else would be better anyways. everybody is pretty darn close to equal.

I think, as someone who also has had long term issues with depression since I was a little kid...your mistake is looking at your depression like it is you.

It isn't unless you allow it to be.

The antidepressants are not the answer, notice everyone that take them mostly never gets well. Life isn't easy and we are not supposed to feel great when every thing is all fucked up in our life. We must change the bad and fix the mess and learn happiness and what make you truly happy.
only then will things get better and happiness comes I had to do it and it was the greatest thing i have done in my life.

What do you mean by "change yourself"? You can't literally change yourself but you can change and shape your ego (self identity). You just first need to accept your ego. I think psychedelics help us learn to let go of our ego to show us what our ego is. To live in the moment and to just overall be ok with ourselves by seeing the moment. When we understand our ego it's now up to the user to accept his ego. Why do you continue taking psychedelics? To run from your ego more? Learn to relove and relive.
When we take them to kill our ego. Are we accepting it? How can you possibly change it if you can't even live with it in the first place? Like any other animal you can only change with complete trust in yourself and the animal (ego)

Hrethic said: I don't like who i am, i don't think i've ever liked who i am.
I've tried psychedelics and i think they can give a better/different perspective on the current situation. I've tried antidepressants and benzo's, and the latter helps when i'm on them (specifically klonopin).
But can you, at the heart of who you are, change that? I want to be more driven, more like a marine, someone who doesn't quit, someone who puts in the extra miles because they know it's what they have to do. I know what i have to do, and i can't ever seem to do it.
Depression is a key issue i know, and maybe all of this will go away in two weeks when i'm at a job i've had an interview for and it went great, but that's not enough. I need a hardwire reboot, new OS, upgraded motivational software, whatever analogy you choose to use. And i can't find it within myself.
Have any of you ever found ways to truly change the core of your being? Personally i don't think it's possible, using the above methods, like i said help, but i think i am who i am, and no matter what i do that's not going to change. And i hate that, because i'm not a very good person when it comes down to it.
Has anyone ever done this?
I don't really have a history with clinical depression so take the following as you see fit. We are all different people with different issues, different upbringings, different environments and genetics. So its very hard to give someone personal advice without having at least a general idea of the sources of their problems. What helps me cope with my internal conflicts could be damaging to someone else, so I'll try to be mindful of that if you'll do the same. Here are some things that keep me in balance: Plenty of time with myself, and plenty of time with people I love. It's good for me to have girl friends, but relationships drive me insane. Find something you enjoy doing and really sink some time into it. I like to challenge my headspace alot. It's good to have new ideas. Drugs are fun. Drugs can point toward unexplored territory. But they should always be a means to an end. And no, for me prescriptions don't count. Pop the occasional benzo if the need arises. Be a drug slut - no commitments. Humor and cynicism go hand in hand for me, but I try to remain firmly on amusement's side emotionally. Intelligent conversation is crucial.
I guess those are the most general things I struggle with sometimes that I also see others struggling with. Take what you will, as with all things, and try not to harp on your feelings too much. It's a big world out there and there are plenty of other things to focus on.

You can change yourself, but it won't come incrementally, it will come in fits in starts or catastrophic torrents of shift, at least the changes you notice. nuances come on slowly, transformations explode into existence.
Good luck!!
