Advice for a first time grower
    #18826751 - 09/11/13 07:38 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hello my awesome fellas I successfully sterilized and inoculated my first pf tek 3 days ago, and am now awaiting mycelium growth, hooray!!
Since it`s my first time I am pondering on weather I should grow it invitro, or in a casing. I`ve read that in vitro may reduce the potential harvest because of the smaller surface?! or something...

But casing could increase contamination risk, but bigger harvest. I would appreciate some comment on this and any tips what so ever.

Casing does not increase yield.....and no one grows mushrooms in or on casings....that is the incorrect term.

Fruit them as cakes in a fruiting chamber, or spawn them to a pasteurized bulk substrate.

If you are growing cubes you do not need a casing layer...

Build a proper "Shot Gun Fruiting Chamber"

After colonization, and consolidation, dunk the cakes for 12-24 hours to rehydrate.  Roll the cakes in dry vermiculite.  The vermiculite casing layer has been shown to help with the formation of pins.

Mist and fan.  Evaporation from the cakes is a huge trigger for pinning.

Read as much as you can.  The more you know, the more your grow will benefit.

Microgramsperunit:

To help with some terminology:

Casing:  Non nutritious layer.  Different grows call for different casings.  PF cakes use vermiculite as a casing layer.  Grain  grows can use a casing of sphagnum peat and vermiculite.

Bulk:  Nutritious mixture.  Mixing to bulk allows your mycelium to expand out and increases size and nutrition.  Examples:  Coco-coir, horse manure, straw.

Here is a link that shows PF cakes being CASED in sphagnum peat

I agree with Notahacker420 that casing is not necessary on most grows.  It really boils down to individual preference.  If your fruiting chamber is set up correctly, there is no need.  I case every bulk grow with a mix of peat/vermiculite.  It is purely personal preference.

I see, sorry for the misuse then, but do you mind me asking what you would recommend. I understand this is a matter of personal preference, but this is my first time growing.

I have a cake incubating now, and I really don`t know if I should remove the aluminum foil once the cake has been fully colonized, and "case" with vermiculite, or if I should put it into another container and case it with vermiculite there instead. Please advice me on this. I really have no preference at this moment, and I really want it to work out nicely the first time.

Make a SGFC Terrarium.
Put perlite on the bottom.
And Dunk & Roll.. birth...

For first time grow, stick with the basics and fruit them in a SGFC. Learn to walk before trying to run

I am unable to create of those terrariums at this point, I would like to keep it small and simple to me at this point. I was thinking of crumbling the fully colonized cake into a plastic bowl and then (if necessary) place some vermiculite on top of it, and then into a plastic filter bag, which keeps moisture in , but allows air exchange and keeps bacteria out as well.

Could that be possible?

Let's just say that straying from TEKs is the best way to fuck up your grow. If you knew at the start of this endeavour that you weren't going to be able to see it through, following the TEK down to the last word from start to finish, you shouldn't have started. Sure, go ahead and experiment, but be prepared accept failure.

What do you have lying around the house that's clear and see through?
And enclosed..
