Are these ok to eat? Incl pictures
    #18827324 - 09/11/13 11:23 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there.

First post with here and need some help:

My friend gave me these: http://imgur.com/xpf5De2,fifa00z#0

I think they were put in a small shoe box right after harvest (2 - 3 months ago) and have turned black. They are not completely dried, you can still bend them without cracking. Are they okay to eat?

My friend are groeing these http://imgur.com/xpf5De2,fifa00z#1 in hos growbox. But all that white mold? or whatever is all over the soil and stems. Can these be harvested when time is right and be eaten?

Hope to hear from more experienced people than myself

Thank you

Are you sure the dried ones turned black? Only because it looks like spores and that would make sense given how open the caps are. They look fine to eat but if they really did turn black after harvesting then maybe not.

That is mold but not bad mold it's more of your mycellium growing on the stems because during fruiting it has such poor fresh air exchange. make a shot gun fruiting chamber (see search engine) and you will have much better results, or your "friend" will whom you're an accomplice in the eye of the law.

I'm really surprised that whatever is in that second picture pinned so well given the horrible conditions that led to all the aerial myc on those thin stems.

No, do not eat them.

They will hurt yours stomach like crazy.

If they are stored when not cracker dry, they become inedible.

Haha those look like some 5th flush neglected mushrooms that I came back to after vacation. I wouldn't eat those. Mine were molding from the inside out and covered with spores, just looked awful...

I agree with Frank. Don't eat 2-3 month old mushrooms that weren't dried properly before they were stored. They'll probably make you sick, he may not have ID'd them all correctly and the potency would be weak from improper storage.

The fruits in the second pic are good to eat. The fuzz is from less-than-optimal growing conditions, but it won't hurt. If you don't eat those all the way make sure you dry them right. A dehydrator is best, but fan drying for a few days followed up with desiccant works too. The stems should snap clean in half when you bend them.

I think some of them were a bit black when they were harvested and turned more black If they turned black from just the spores, they are OK? How can I be sure of this?

Ok, so just to be sure; they can be harvested and eaten, but I still gotta remove the fuzz white a knife or so before?

Thanks for your answers - I really appreciate it.

They should be cracker crisp never have been anything other than cracker crisp since harvesting. If they're the least bit flexible I wouldn't eat them. It's hard to say from looking but judging from the sound of how they were stored I wouldn't eat them. If by some miracle they were dried in a dehydrator and then just left in the box maybe they will be ok but even still after the dehydrator they should go in a glass jar.

It can stay on it's just mycellium. It can be eaten it's just not attractive or desirable.
