On this day in 1942 the fighting in Guadalcanal became furious as Vendergrift divided the island into 10 independent sectors. The Japanese were ferocious, but ultimately faced defeat.

I too enjoy anything from the middle ages. Anything from stone age to 17th century is good too though. Also anything science or astronomy related. So pretty much anything actually..

Day 10:
The Tulip Craze:
Perhaps the strangest financial bubbles in the history of human commerce began in the early 1620's. The Dutch peoples had become so incredibly wealthy what they would start to poor more and more money into rare tulip bulbs. Over time this strange market grew until in 1633 three tulip bulbs were traded for a house, starting the tulip craze.
The prospect of making a quick fortune soon attracted citizens from all classes who were willing to sell all of their belonging for a chance to join in the fray. During this craze it was very common for a particular tulip bulb to change hangs many times just within a single day.

The market reached it's climax when on February 5, 1637 a family of orphans traded a bed of tulips planted by their recently deceased father for 90,000 guilders which would be equivalent to over $10 million dollars today. That very week the market completely bottomed out. By may of that year, a bed of tulips what would have been worth 1000 guilders in January, was worth only 6 guilders.
This crash lead to court case after court case between buys and sellers of these now worthless tulip bulbs. In May of 1638 the Dutch government decided enough was enough with these court cases, and they ordered for sellers to cancel all contracts after the buy had only played a measly 3.5% of the agreed upon price. Needless to say this left many financially ruined.
At the height of the tulip craze, one bulb was worth roughly $1 million today. Or be equivalent to 8 fat pigs, 4 fat oxen, 12 fat sheep,24 tuns of wheat, 48 tuns of rye,two casks of hogshead wine, 4 tuns of beer, 2 tuns of butter, 1000 lbs of cheese, 1 silver drinking mug, a bed, and a ship on one occasion. Or just 6 ships if you were feeling very nautical.
A special note to everyone: Thanks for all the ideas, granted Vinsue doesn't spoil them ahead of time again, expect your suggestions to be coming down the pipeline sometime soon here.

and the difference between horrid living situations and actually having pretty much more then families could ask for, nowadays, and filling their time with rich glorious bulbs.
it's night and day. alot of people think of all the bad but none of the prosperity when it comes to centuries before ours.
there was some damn prosperous and awesome times. imagine growing up then? and in Denmark... "mommy can i have a chocolate?" "yes, you can have the CHOCOLATE GIRAFFE." "thanks mommy, we'll enjoy it by the fire, after father comes home."

Because, on the whole, people lived in squalor and destitution prior to the industrial revolution. In terms of daily conveniences, it is like night and day. Present times being day, medieval times being night

pretty much, it's whack ain't it? but then again, there have been civilizations that have spanned centuries that were quite... prosperous. not 17 century prosperous, i mean, there was quite alot of squalor but still, not as bad as people make it out to be. i mean, nowadays there IS still squalor, too.
but yeah, medieval times, that's the worst type of destitute. oy, that would be some shit to live then. eating crap, living in crap, smelling horses ass every where you go, and no showers.

I've also hear stories of people spending fortunes on rare tulips only to find they had genetic abnormalities which made them unable to reproduce

Like investing hundreds of millions of dollars on some shitty painting is any less retarded, a field of tulips is much more beautiful than anything a person could make.

that's totally debatable, there's a huge difference between natural beauty and something that a person made. that's why if someone painted tulips and it was really lifelike, its amazing in a completely different way then the actual field.

Reminds me of the Beanie Baby craze.
I worked in a tulip greenhouse once, sort of interesting to see but the job itself sucked. It was all hydroponic and the tulips were always getting moldy. One of the jobs was inspecting for mold as the cut flowers came along the line, I'm sure many more got moldy in transit. Someone suggested to me later that the problem was too little air circulation in the greenhouse.
