Day 7: History fact of the Day.

What people drank during the Middle Ages.

(Because this one is a little short, I'm sure I could be convinced to say a second related fact today.)

The first thing that might come to your mind would be water, of course.
But the fact of the matter is, water was probably one of the least drunk liquids during the Middle Age.
Due to the fact that it was so hard for them to come across clean and safe drinking water.

So what would be safe?
Any liquid which has been fermented, aka any alcohol, would be safe to drink because the contaminates would be burnt off during the process of making it.
Because of this by far the most popular drink of the Middle Ages was Wine, Beer, Ale, and Mead.

I honestly have a very hard time picturing this, imagine how shit faced everyone would be if they only drank beer when they were thirsty.
No wonder things were so fucked back then...

It varies with wealth and status, obviously a nobles are going to live longer the peasants and serifs working on the fields.
Perhaps the worst part was that for children under 5, only 1/3 survived.
And for those that did, the expected age was mid to late 40s.

lets get some more dark history stuff, Sara. like whenever you think of some dark evil shit, please, let me know.

also, in that regard, if you think of anything the total opposite, that actually be kinda surprising.

like is their any heartwarming historical articles, of like some orphans being housed and fed by some wealthy industrialist and loving helping kids and shit. that could be nice too.

nothing else to add but, this thread is kinda cool. :nothingtoadd:

Nice thread. Loved history in highschool.

The middle ages were so grimy, bunch of drunken violent religious fanatics, none of that any more though :smirk:

They could drink alcohol all day because it would be diluted, if you drank 5% alcohol and nothing else you wouldn't make it a month.

Thanks guys!

The Second Fact of the Day:

Weddings in the Middle Ages.

As strange as it might sound, weddings in the Middle Ages were a hell of a lot less formal.
All that would need to happen in order to legitimize a marriage was...
a) an exchange of gifts between two parties.
b) that it be consummated that night. ( :doggystyle: )

So imagine you're at your local tavern, buy drinks for someone, one thing leads to another, you sleep together.
Boom, you're married.

As funny as it sounds, this type of this would happen all the time,
from marrying someone overnight for looks to marrying overnight for fortune.

This lead to trial after trial of people saying that they were wanting to be divorced, so much so that eventually the church got involved.
This is when marriages were taken into the church.
Not only that but the priest would be required to watch as the bride and groom would consummate their marriage,
many times others nobles would be required to come along too, to make sure that the marriage really was consummated and no one could say otherwise.

Awkward...

It was also common practice to take the bloody sheets from after sex and keep them for the rest of their life as a form of proof the marriage was consummated.
Woman could many times get out of marriages before this just by bringing in clean sheets and saying that was proof enough that they had not had sex.

You could easily drink nothing but 5% alcohol.
Ale was common, and that's anything stronger than 4% by definition IIRC.

And they probably weren't shitfaced all the time-
Tolerance.
I haven't been "drunk" in months  and I drink 6-8 beers (mostly IPAs and SN Torpedo is my most drank at 7.2%) throughout the day, every day. As well as a couple other GABA drugs I take daily. And I haven't been drunk. I do however get a buzz at night by drinking a few more quickly than I do the rest of the day.

My guess is most people drank beer (which then ment anything weaker than 4%+ ale) to keep themselves well hydrated, but at the end of the day would sit down and have a nice strong ale.

IIRC another fun fact is that beer was served in 1L+ glasses/servings

Maybe you could live off of nothing but 5% alcohol, I'd like to see some kind of source for that but I'm too lazy/indifferent to look up a contradictory source and the burden of proof is on me so fuck it.

I did read about this before though, and can come up later with a source to support the statement that what they drank for hydration was generally diluted.

Most of the drinks didn't have a high abv, and I think that a lot of poorer people during the middle ages drank water.  I could see why they would try to avoid it, but it isn't like a lot of people had the luxury of drinking alcohol all the time.  When you get thirsty enough you will drink whatever the hell is in front of you.
http://mbhp.forgottensea.org/noalcohol.html
is a source of some non-alcoholic drinks from the middle ages.

Ya I can hardly imagine how awkward that would be, especially because for most couples it would be their first time together, and many times their first time at all.

it sounds more like straight evil, than awkward. but you know, it's kinda their own fault for being so passive and being so superstitious and fearful.

crazy humans. i seriously can only depict just gruesome, loathsome shit from middle history. i mean, it's so icky, it's rather... exciting. just imagining living in that time gives me the creeps. Shakespearian skull holding, heart eating, creeps. :fonda:

(PS: keeping bloody sheets as tokens, is just wrong. lol )

Overall pretty degenerate times, if I had to time travel back then and stay there would probably run off into the wilderness or just go into a war. Living very long in that oppressive environment would be a nono

yeah, and you'd figure it'd probably be better and more fun to go out with a bang.

maybe that's a part of the male psyches conditioning..? that period of time, men would have been about "war and being strong is all a man has time for" kinda mentality. :ooo:
