no wonder you vote GOP and believe everything FOX news tells you.
I don't watch FoxNews. I don't watch any TV news at all. I do read almost all of the NY Times everyday. They drop it in my driveway around 6 AM which is when I get up. I have about an hour and half before I have to go to work. I do the math puzzles first then the crossword on most days (it gets harder through the week. Saturday is brutal). Then I get my daily chuckles from the letters and op ed pages. Unlike you I do not choose to isolate myself from competing ideologies. I am not a coward or a sheep. I vote GOP because they are not Dem.Quote:

Because I don't have $5?Quote:

I never heard that phrase before. Every time I've seen it it referred to Democrat voters who knee jerk pulled a lever for whatever retard was on the Dem line. Brainwashed? I find that laughable coming from youQuote:
i used to dislike you, now i have massive amounts of sympathy for how pathetic you are.
Thanks. Since you are a charitable liberal please deposit $5 in the Shroomery account for me so I can change my user name. Thanks in advance.

Day 29:
Witches:
Ever since there has been human cultures, there has been the belief in magic. All across the globe, every human inhabited continent you can name has a history of witchcraft and magic.

For the vast majority of history witchcraft did not have such a negative connotation as it does now. Witches would go by many names depending on the specific culture, such as shamans, witchdoctors or sorcerers. These witches were highly respected for their ability to help others with healing, fortune telling, and religious and spiritual matters. However, there were commonly punishments for malicious sorcery, here is an example from the Code of Hammurabi. (I hope you all know what that is. (eye for eye, tooth for tooth?))
Quote:
"If a man has put a spell upon another man and it is not justified, he upon whom the spell is laid shall go to the holy river; into the holy river shall he plunge. If the holy river overcome him and he is drowned, the man who put the spell upon him shall take possession of his house. If the holy river declares him innocent and he remains unharmed the man who laid the spell shall be put to death. He that plunged into the river shall take possession of the house of him who laid the spell upon him."
The Romans would use witches occasionally as a scape goat for PR problems such as disease outbreaks. This time and time again would result in executions, many times reaching quadruple digits. But it is not until the Hebrew Bible repeatedly condemns witchcraft that things start to go really bad for witches. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 "No one shall be found among you who makes a son or daughter pass through fire, who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or one that casts spells, or who consults ghosts or spirits, or who seeks oracles from the dead. For whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord;" Exodus 22:18 "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" 1 Samuel 28 "hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land"
This does not reach full climax until the Middle Ages. Touching back on the river idea in the Code of Hammurabi, the "ordeal by water" became a common my of testing witches innocence. This completely faulty system involved throwing the supposed witch into water (most people could't swim) to see if they would sink. If the person would sink, they would be considered innocent and pulled back up. Although the very very very large majority of the time they would die before being pulled up. And if the person would float they would be considered a witch because they used magic to float, and would be killed. This is a lot like a perviously used "ordeal by water," although the outcomes of sinking/floating were flip-flopped.

For as bad as all of this may sound, the real shit show had yet to come with the Protestant Reformation. At this point the church started to very heavily associate witch craft to Satanic rituals. They would fabricate stories of wild Satanic parties with naked dancing, and cannibalistic infanticide. A Witch hysteria irrupted across Europe after this leading to over 100,000 executions, most commonly by fire. 80% of those executed were women.

For as much attention as it is given, the Salem witch trials were not nearly as bad as the ones that took place early in Europe. The reason that so much attention is given to Salem is due to the relation of the Salem witch trials to the Red Scare. Due to this fact, as well as the fact that I'm sure you all already know all about Salem from schooling I'm not going to be spending all too much time on it. From February 1692 to May 1693 the town of Salem in colonial Massachusetts was plagued with an imaginary witch problem. Starting out with Abrigail Williams's (a personal hero of mine) false accusations of witchcraft which resulted in 20 executions. This only fueled the scare as more and more accusations would come forward, most of the time for personal gain. When all was said and done, 150 "witches" had been arrested.

Still to this day, witch hunts are still an issue in the world. These witch hunts are now only an issue in Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, and Papua New Guinea. India sees the death of around 200 witches a year, and 50 in the year of 2008 in New Guinea.

What? There was plenty of attention to them before Miller wrote the Crucible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_depictions_of_the_Salem_witch_trials

And this is why wizards don't talk to us.

How can you tell when there's an elephant in your fridge? You can see it's footprints in the butter. How do you know if there's two elephants in your fridge? You can hear them giggle when the light goes out. How can you tell if there are three elephants in the your fridge? You can't quite get the door closed. Why did the tomato blush? Because it saw the salad dressing.

Hey guys! Happy Halloween! I got a party to DJ tonight, and a spooky set I need to prepare so I apologize if I go quick here.

Day 30:
Halloween:
Our modern day Halloween was started ages ago by the Druids of Ireland. They called this holiday was called Samhain, it was celebrated on November 1st marking the end of their year. It symbolized the end of the summer harvest season, and the start of the winter coldness. They believed that on the night before the new year the boundaries between worlds is the thinnest. They believed this allowed the spirits of the dead to come back a revisit the world on this night. It was believed that these sprites would cause mischief, but also make it easier for druid priests to foresee the future. Samhain was celebrated with huge sacred bonfires, animal sacrifices, telling each others fortunes, and wearing costumes. These costumes were most commonly animal heads and skin, and they would be used to confused pesky spirits.

In 43 C.E. the Roman Empire conquered the vast majority of Ireland. It was at this point that the Romans combined Samhain with two Roman Holidays. The first of which was Feralia, a day in late October the Romans used to commemorate the dead. And the second was a day honoring the Roman Goddess Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees. Her symbol was an apple which leads to be modern tradition of apple bobbing.
On May 13th of 609 C.E. Pope Boniface IV created the Christian holiday "All Martyrs Day." This holiday as the name might imply was dedicated to Christian martyrs. (Someone who dies for a religious cause) Later Pope Pope Gregory III added Saints as well to the holiday making All Saints Day. When doing so he also changed the date of observance from May 13th to November 1st. This overlapping holidays is a common practice used throughout the ages to make older beliefs less relevant. In 1000 C.E. the church changes their mind again and changes All Saints Day to All Souls day. All Souls Day, now changed to November 2nd, was a day to honor the dead. All Souls Day was celebrated in much the same way as Samhain, they would dress up, have parades, and bonfires.

As we all have heard before, America is known as a great melting pot. This is due to the fact we have so many different cultures and ethnicities here This is exactly the may that the modern Halloween was born. Many different European cultures mixed with different Native American customs, bringing about an American Halloween. These colonial halloweens involved "play parities," the sharing of ghost stories, fortune telling, sining, dancing, and mischief making.
During the second half of the Nineteenth century huge numbers of immigrants flooded the United States bringing new customs. Many of the Irish fleeing the potato famine of 1846 would dress up and go door to door asking for food or money. This as you might immagine brings us to our more modern tradition of "trick-or-treat." A little side fact here, 25% of all candy purchased in the US is done so for Halloween.
By the end of the 1800's Halloween had been transformed into a holiday more about community then ghosts and witchcraft. And by the 1920's America had fully adopted and fallen in love the Halloween we know and love today.
