Day 27:
History of Ghosts:
As far back as we look, the idea that a persons soul exists separate from their body has been help by human societies. Due to the nature of this idea, it has always been just as ancient an idea that a soul may exist after a body is died. We see evidence of funeral rituals used to prevent the dead souls from haunting the living in every early example of human settlements.

As far back as the Greeks and Romans we see textual examples of ghost sitting that had been documented and preserved over the years. We can see notable examples from the Greek writer Lucian, and Roman writers Plautus and Pliny the Younger, all of which believed to be haunted by ghosts. Perhaps the greatest example of these comes from Pliny the Younger, who was an incredibly credible Roman Author as well as statesmen. In letters he wrote to his friends we see him expressing that the specter of an old man with a long beard and rattling chain haunted his home. The very first poltergeist, a ghost that causes disturbance such as noises or moving objects but is never actually seen, was reported in 856 C.E.. A German farm house believed that they were haunted by a poltergeist that haunted them by starting fires and throwing stones. The very first scene in Hamlet, arguably one of the greatest stories ever told, involves the ghost of Hamlets murdered Father.

The Tower of London, a building some of you might remember from my London Bridge fact, is perhaps on of the most haunted historical buildings. Serving as a jail and torture chamber for years, countless ghost stories from all across the ages can be attributed to this building. One of the most common sightings at the tower of London is the ghost of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII (I hope you all know who this prick was) wife, and Queen Elizabeth the First's mother. After Henry wanted another wife, she was accused of witchcraft, treason, incest and adultery and executed in the tower of London, were she remains today.

Benjamin Franklin, Americans beloved first playboy has also been accused of some postmortem mischief. Many report that the ghost of Benjamin Franklin can be seen wandering the library of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some of the wilder reports have even said that the statue of him outside the American Philosophical Society has come to life and danced in the streets.
There have been ghosts reported in the White House, ever since the second president John Adams took office. John's wife would commonly report to see a ghost in a cap when she would be doing laundry, she said the ghost arms were poised as if it were carrying cloths. Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife if Abraham Lincoln and a very strong believer in the occult, would hold séances in the White House to communicate with her dead sons. During these séances among other things, the voice of Andrew Jackson, Americas hot headed seventh president, swearing and stomping through the halls. The ghost of Jackson was also experienced by Harry Truman, American 33rd President. We wrote to his wife Bess,
Quote:
I sit here in this old house and work on foreign affairs, read reports, and work on speeches-- all the while listening to the ghosts walk up and down the hallway and even right in here in the study. The floors pop and the drapes move back and forth-- I can just imagine old Andy and Teddy having an argument over Franklin.
The Rose Room, the room Jackson stated During his presidency is considered by most to be the room with the most activity in it. But with out a doubt no figure has been reported as many times as Abraham Lincoln, the 17th President. Everyone from first ladies to queens to prime ministers have reported seeing the ghost of Lincoln in the White House. With out a doubt period in which the most activity of Lincoln was seen, was during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Once during World War Two Winston Churchill reported seeing Lincoln's ghost in his room hitting by the fireplace when me emerged from his bath when he was visiting RDF at the White House. Eleanor Roosevelt, FDR's wife, used Lincoln's bed room as her study and would commonly report the presence of Abe in there with her. Lincoln's ghost is also reported to haunt the old Springfield capitol building as well as the Ford theater he was assassinated in.
Abe and his wife Mary.

On this day in 1944 the German Propaganda Ministry admitted that the Eastern Front had been breached and Soviet forces were on a rampage.
At this point, the Germans knew the gig was up and now it was a war for national survival and they would lose this war.

Germans fought honorably in the end. This picture has always elicited a lot of emotion from me.

Those kids can’t be over 15 and they were put in pairs and given a panzerfaust (single shot precursor to the RPG) and a rifle, probably only one magazine too.

There is nothing honorable about arming 15 year old children and sending them to slaughter. Did you know that as the end neared they ramped up gas chamber production?
Scum. How can anybody who admires them be considered anything other than scum?

I did not know that, how many more gas chambers did they produce? Pretty stupid to build gas chambers instead of tanks, at a moment like that.

I don't think they built more they just made sure they operated at maximum capacity. So much so that the crematoriums couldn't keep up.

Day 28:
Zombies:
The word "zombie" means drastically different things to different peoples. To most, images of reanimated brain munch corpuses come up, but to others images of Vodou witchcraft.

Believe it or not, the word zombie was hardly used by Europeans until it is adopted into their folklore in the 19th century. Instead, the idea of zombies is only seen in African and Haitian culture. But this type of zombie is very different then what we may imagine, it involves Vodou. It is believed in the tenets of Vodou that a bokor (Vodou sorcerer) my revive a dead person. These "zombi"s have no will of their own and remain under the control of the bokor. These zombis are most commonly used by the bokor for physical labor. This is done by the bokor capturing the intended zombis "zombi astral", which is a part of the human soul. Bokors commonly keep their zombi astral's in bottle which enhance their own power. But it is believed that after some time God will take back the soul and allow the zombi to pass on. It is believed that a bokor may feed their zombie salt if they wish for it to return to the grave.

In 1982, respected Harvard ethnobotanist Wade Davis, author of "The Serpent and the Rainbow," claimed zombies to be real after visiting Haiti. He said that a person may be turned into a zombie by introducing two compounds into the persons blood stream. The first of which is, tetrodotoxin (TTX), a powerful neurotoxin found in pufferfish. The second, a dissociative drug, most commonly datura. The two in componation would induce a deathlike state in which the zombie would be 100% at the will of the bokor. Below are some real life zombies.

The 1929 book, The Magic Island by William Seabrook is given credit by Time Magazine for "introduced 'zombi' into U.S. speech." This book, like every early example of the zombie, involves voodoo. In 1932, Victor Halperin directed "White Zombie," the worlds first zombie movie starring the famed Bela Lugosi. In 1944, DC Comics came out with the character Solomon Grundy, a zombie, in the Green Lantern. Both White Zombie and the character Solomon Grundy involve voodoo to bring about the zombie.
In was not until 1968 when horror icon George A. Romero came out with "Night of the Living Dead" that the modern idea of a zombie came into being. The monsters of this movie did not originate from voodoo, rather radioactive contamination from Venus. From here on out popular culture will view the flesh hungry monsters of the film as zombies opposed to their African counterparts. These "new" zombies more often then not come from pandemic virus of some sort. With Romero's sequels Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, zombies become credible sub-genre of horror.

Fast-forward to today and we see that this sub-genera has grown to become one of the most popular generas of Horror. We see massive box office movies start to use zombies as the plot as Romero did. We see many of the most popular games today involving zombies such as Left 4 Dead and Minecraft. The state of Wyoming has even got money budgeted away for an upcoming zombie apocalypse.

Zombie is a 1995 novel by Joyce Carol Oates which explores the mind of a serial killer. It was based on the life of Jeffrey Dahmer.
Dahmer stated in an interview with Stone Phillips, "The only motive that there ever was to completely control a person, a person I found physically attractive, and keep them with me as long as possible, even if it meant keeping a part of them.".[1]
