On this day in 1941 the German Army is within site of Moscow. Everyone who can flee to the East does so as the Russian people realize the news on the war front was really propaganda and they are in grave danger. This is as close to Moscow as the Germans are going to get.

Day 22:
Eairly 20th Century Fads:
I decided we might as well start the week out light with a nice little list of few really outrageous fed from them Early 20th Century.
Dancing Marathons:
This fad comes to us from the 1920's and 30's, during the hush times of the depression couples would participate in these dancing marathons for a chance to win a few hundred dollars. These were a huge cash cow for their promoters seeing as many people would pay to watch the participants and be entertained. The basic idea of these marathons were to simply be the couple to stay dancing the longest, keep in mind these things many times lasted months with the record being 5148 hours (7 months.) Participants were fed 12 times a day, and as for the obvious question of sleep, couples would time each others wastes together and take turns sleeping, as long as their knees did not touch the ground they were not disqualified.

Flag Pole Sitting:
During the 1920's the fad of flagpole sitting became a thing, as the name indicates this test of endurance involves climbing to the top of a flag pole and shitting atop a small platform you brought up with you.

The record colder at 125 days, Richard "Dixie" Blandy died when his pole snapped and he plummeted to the group in the middle of a mall.
Six Day Bicycle Races:
This fad comes to us from the U.K., where teams of two cyclists would race against each other for six days to win money. Starting in the 1920's and spreading soon after to the United States and remained being a big deal into the 1930's. At lot of these participants had triple digests in the number of races they had been in. This is actually still done today but pretty much mostly in Europe.
Bunion Derbies:
This was an even that took place in 1929, and had many races mimic its still afterwords. This was a foot race all across the United States of America, starting at the Ascot Speedway in Las Angeles and ending at the Madison Square Garden for a distance of 3423.5 miles. The winner of this event was Andy Payne, who finished the foot race after only 573 hours, or 23.8 days, but the race tool 84 days for the last racer to finish.
Gold Fish Swallowing:
Starting in the 1930's this strange activity became a fad in schools in the United States despite the actual origins of the spread being unknown. Like most of this fad, it's pretty self explanatory, it basically just involved seeing who could swallow the most live goldfish.

The world record holder was able to stomach 300 live goldfish, what in the actual fuck.

Day 23:
Final Exits: Rasputin:
That horrible Disney "Anastasia" really fucked up when it comes to Rasputin and as a result has given Rasputin a very unwarranted reputation based on pure fallacy. In the movie they portray him as a villain, but in real life he was most trusted advisor of Russians last Emperor, Nicholas II.

You see Rasputin was regarded as a healer and an elder, and when the Emperors only son, Alexei needed help with his hemophilia, the royal family asked Rasputin for help, thus starting their relationship. They Royal family say him as a "Man of God" and a prophet and as time went on he was always present during Nicholas's decision making.
This is all good and everything, but as I hope you all know, to be on the good side with the Royal Family at this time in Russia's history was difficulty not a good thing. This is evidenced by the February Revolution of 1917 in which the Royal Palace is stormed and the Romanov family are all executed.
Rasputin's involvement with the Romanov's led Khionia Guseva, a prostitute, to attack him suddenly as he was exiting a church on June 29th 1914. She plunged her knife into his abdomen causing his entrails to spill out, upon seeing this she exclaimed, "I have killed the Antichrist!" But Rasputin is a bad motherfucker and it's gotta take a lot more then that to bring him down.
How ever, on December 19th, 1916 a group of nobles launched an assassination plot against him deciding that his influence had become too great. They lured him into the basement of Prince Felix Yusupov's palace (a conspirator,) where they served him cakes and red wine laced with cyanide. After some time it had still had no effect so they gave him more to eat and drink, but as time went on it became clear that the only thing the cake and wine were doing was getting him drunk.
After 5 times the amount of poison needed to kill a man Rasputin stood unaffected so the conspirators decided to shoot him in back. Shooting him in the back twice, Yusupov joined his conspirators upstairs, then later went back down to check on the body. When he entered the room Rasputin suddenly lunged at him and whispered, "You bad boy," in his ear and escaped into the yard. The conspirators chased after him shooting him two more time before beating him with a rubber club, tying him up, then putting his body in a bag and then throwing him into the Neva River.
His body was later found freed from his bondage and showing indication he was attempting to break free from under a thick layer of ice. This means he must have managed to both untie himself and free himself from the bag after being poisoned with 5 times the lethal amount of cyanide, being shot four times, and beaten with clubs. Perhaps the dude really was what they said he was because an autopsy after his death showed that he had most difficulty been poisoned with five times what it should have taken to kill him.
