:lolsy: awesome.

Thanks for putting these up Sara.

This reminds me.
I heard that Thomas Edison worked at a patent office, and ripped off quite a few of "his" inventions.

Any truth on that?

Day 18:

Bad Dudes: Ivan the Terrible:

I almost feel like this should be a part of another segment much like final exits, but dealing with some of histories biggest villians.
This being the third of the series, and the first two Elizabeth Báthory for week one and Vlad the Impaler for week one.
So once a week from now on I'm going to be having a fact segment called "bad dudes."

At the age of three Ivan was proclaimed the Grand Prince of Moscow when his father died and he inherited the post.
Not only this, but he follows it up on January 16th 1547 when he was the first person to be crowned the Tzar of All Russia.
The beginning of his rule was great he made changes that needed to happen and everything was going swimmingly.
But everything changed in 1560 when his wife Anastasia was poisoned.
This was not only a deep emotional blow to him, but it also deeply affected him mentally, for ever after his mental health would never be the same.

After gaining absolute control, Ivan established the Oprichniki, Russia's first secret police who where originally 1000 strong.
Much like samurai in japan, Oprichniki enjoyed special privileges other citizens did not.
Suspicious of royalty Ivan at this points starts hist first round of executions targeting royal clans.
The executions that Ivan ordered where supposed to,  "mimic the tortures of hell.

Perhaps what he is most know for is the Massacre of Novgorod.
Believing that the city had been behaving traitorously, Ivan decided to march on his own city.
This Massacre of Novgorod was involved the city first being sealed off, then every single one of its inhabitants tortured and then killed.
As Ivan and his son was crossing the bridge to enter the town he was met on the bridge by Archbishop Pimen.
Going a long with tradition, the Archbishop attempted to bless the tzar, but I van refused accusing of treason and plotting to defect over to Poland-Lithuania.
Ivan paraded Pimen around the city strapped backwards to a mare as he was mocked, after this he was arrested as Ivan murdered the city.
Sources from the time state that there were between 2,700 and 27,000 victims of this massacre.

Another example of Ivans slipping mental state can be seen when during a heated argument he hits his eldest son over the head with his metal staff, killing him instantly.
This was very obviously another deep blow to Ivan who's 2nd oldest son has deemed too unfit mentally to succeed him, and his third son died of complications  during his youth.

On March 28th, 1584 Ivan the terrible died of a stroke as he was playing chess.
Despite all of his wrong doings, Ivan transformed Russia from small rural medieval state into a billion-acre empire.
He was seen by very many Russians of the time as a hero, the disenfranchised of the time saw him as a champion of the poor and powerless.

On this day in 1944 the German High Command issued a directive stating that all males who were 16 years of age were eligible to be called up for service in the German Wermacht (armed forces).  The worst war the world has ever seen took a cruel twist.

Oprichnik

"When Ivan declared himself the "Hand of God", 300 of the Oprichniki were selected to be his personal "brotherhood" that lived within Ivan's castle at Aleksandrovskaia Sloboda near Vladimir. Every night at 4 AM these Oprichnik "monks" would attend a sermon given by Ivan himself before the morning's ritual executions. The Oprichniki would lead an externally ascetic lifestyle, like the monks they emulated, but there would be mad outbreaks of cruelty and debauchery. Ivan would sing while they ate, himself not eating till everyone had finished. He would go to bed at 9 PM, with three blind men telling him stories.

Day 19:

Mushroom Special Pt.1: Jesus and the Buddha

Today will be two facts for one post, both involving mushrooms!
Our first will be about everyones favorite dude, Jesus!

Jesus:

John M. Allegro, a British Archeologist, is one of very few people trusted by the Christian religion enough to be a Dead Sea Scrolls Scholar.
Although when he came back with what be believed the scrolls to have said, I'm sure the Christians wished they would have chosen some one else.

He said that the Dead Sea Scrolls actually said that Jesus was nothing more then a codeword used my an ancient mushroom cult.
The mushroom that "Jesus" was supposed to be a codeword for was none other then the hallucinogenic Amanita Muscaria, the state mushroom of Colorado.
That cult that modern day Christianity is supposedly based on would get really loaded off the mushrooms and then have orgies. (I'm down)

If you're interested in learning more about this, the guy wrote a book called, "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross."
Another book he wrote that deals with the subject is "The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Christian Myth," although I have not read this second one.

The Buddha:

Siddhārtha Gautama, born in 563 BCE, was without a doubt one of the most enlightened mind our would has ever seen.
Still to this day we his life effecting millions of peoples Buddhist or not.
Despite multiple assassination attempts what finally killed the Buddha was mushrooms.

His blacksmith friend Cunda prepared the Buddha with a meal of mushrooms.
Shortly after eating them he became violently ill, and laid down; when ever you see a statue of the Buddha laying down it as always of him dying.
He did his best to convince his friend that his dead at the age of 80, had nothing to do with the meal he had prepared.
But jeez, I really can't even start to think about how bad that buy must have felt for killing the Buddha.
