I am just finding out about these digital media devices and am pretty stoked. Any advice on the advantages of one over the other?
I want to:
Stream music/listen to internet radio Play my music from my hard drive (PC) Watch documentaries Watch movies (Things like HBO would be nice, but i am not likely to subscribe or buy any content.)
I will NOT:
Play games Or subscribe to a bunch of channels.
Music is my main use - movies would be my partners main use.
- I am not sure if roku allows one to stream music from their PC Harddrive, could someone clarify? - Free channels - Anygood? - Must have subscription channels, cost?

I use a WD Live. It has two USB hook ups, is wifi capable, and can also access network storage. Also does Netflix, Hulu, etc. I'm really surprised that it only has 3.5 stars on Amazon. I'm guessing that's because it was laggy for about a year, but the most recent firmware updates made it lightning fast. I usually download movies/music to my external harddrive or a flash drive. It plays 1080p MKV files just fine.

Those are basic needs and should be fulfilled by either Apple TV or Roku. There are some subtle differences (e.g. ability to stream 1080p or not).
Another thing to consider is getting a "smart" blu-ray player. Some blu-ray players do all of the above and have the (obvious) addition of playing physical discs and accepting other physical media (CD, DVD's USB drives, flash cards etc.)

Kindle fire HD. Micro HDMI cable. Netflix is cheap. A last.fm subscription is like 3 bucks a month and works great for me. Here's a good website for docs. http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/all/

Can that be neworked?
I found that the networking capabilities of my home theater receiver are pretty impressive. Anyone can come to my house, download an app on their smartphone, then play their music on my stereo. I think they can even share videos and pics as well.

Now that I think about it an android tablet would probably be better. I got a fire because they're really cheap compared to a good tablet. I thought I saw some on sell for like $150.
I dont't know if it could be networked like that. I use mine to print stuff with my wifi printer and remote desktop control. The worst thing about them is the amazon app store doesn't have a lot of apps you got to slideload some or root your device. Also low ram.

I got a really good refurbished computer tower for under $300. It stays connected to my main tv and I use a wireless keyboard for my remote control. Its probably more than a roku but if you have the money it's much better.
