Mycelium Box Grow * 1
    #18827128 - 09/11/13 10:04 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, I'm new to the shroomery, and this is my first post!

So this isn't going to be the most interesting thread in the world, but I noticed that there weren't really many grow box posts on the site.

Before people start telling me how it would be much cheaper to start out with PF tek, don't. I know that. I needed the fastest grow possible, and once I have shrooms I will take a bunch of prints and hope some of them survive until I next decide to grow.

So my current situation is that I've moved into my student house about a week ago, and I'll be starting the third year of my degree at the end of the month. I've never tripped before, and wanted to have at least one experience before term starts and I'm too stressed and busy to trip. A growbox seemed like the best option for this.

I've gone with B+ in 2100cl (my thinking being that fewer, larger shrooms might be easier to pick without disturbing the substrate too much. That's probably ridiculous but I had to base my decision on something). It seems to be made up of perlite - colonised grain - vermiculite. I've currently got it sitting on a box, which is on an electric blanket. It took a bit of tweaking but now the temp is consistently 23 degrees (I sterilised a small thermometer and pushed it into the cake so I can get a pretty accurate reading without disturbing it). It's been like that for about 5 days now. There's a little surface mycelium growth but not much to see yet. Here's a pic anyway.

I've been working on my drying setup to keep me occupied. I've got a fairly large air drying chamber wired up to mains with intake and outlet fans and a smaller desiccant chamber made from a bean sprouting thing I found in a charity shop. This might well be overkill for a small grow but I had fun making it and I only spend about £5 on the lot.

I'll update when something actually happens :p

When I checked the box this morning there seemed to be quite a good covering of pins across the surface of the cake. They're pretty microscopic and completely white at the moment so it's hard to tell them apart from little patches of surface mycelium, but they seem less fuzzy. Hopefully it'll be more obvious in the morning. I tried to take a photo with my macro lens but it didn't like looking through the fogged up plastic bag so you can't see much. I don't really want to risk contamination if at all possible so I'm only opening the bag very briefly to fan inside a couple of times a day.

Be careful with that! Tell no one! I would hate to see you lose your college education for getting busted growing.

Ah no, I wouldn't ever grow on campus property. This is just a privately rented house (in a completely different town). The uni only cares about what happens on their property (unless you're putting yourself in actual danger, presumably). That said, I've still only told one of my housemates, and she's the person I'm most likely to end up tripping with. But thanks for your concern!

In other news, I still can't tell for sure if what I'm seeing are pins. Assuming they are then I think things are looking set for a decent first flush. What's the proportion of pins that are likely to actually make it to full sized fruits?

So I left the kit for about 24 hours and having come back to it there are definitely about 10 easily identifiable pins and the whole cake is covered in those little white specs which I hope are like a precursor to proper pins. I'll try to get some pics in the morning. Unfortunately the temperature of my room has dropped while I was away and even with the heater the cake is only at 21 degrees. I'm sure that's not going to slow growth much though. I'm scared to turn the heater up though in case it overheats while I'm asleep so I'll leave it for now.

Felony drug offenses will likely cause problems for you at school even if it was off campus.  I've known quite a few people busted for selling weed that were suspended for a semester/year.

Thanks man. I'm actually studying physics but I've always had a bit of a flair for making stuff :p.

Have been a bit busy these last couple of days so I didn't get any pictures of the very early pins. I'm really happy with the current growth pattern. There are now a good number of evenly spaced fruits and loads of developing pins in the gaps. Growth seems to be fairly slow but has sped up a bit in the last day or two. Here's a couple of pics from yesterday

and another from this morning.

So two days on and there's been significant growth. I'm expecting to harvest this flush in the next few days.

What would be peoples advice on harvesting? Should I pick the first fruits once the veils break and then wait for the rest to mature or pick the whole lot at once? (I think I'm going to use the 2nd or 3rd flush for spores rather than this one.)

Yeah and thin stipes.  More FAE is needed.

Yeah, the bases of the shrooms are even more fuzzy this evening. I'll try to fan more regularly. Currently I'm only remembering about twice a day .
There's been a fair amount of growth over the course of the day. I'll try to post more pics tomorrow.

Hey guys. Went out today to try my luck at field archery. Conclusion- it's awesome! Anyway, when I came back I found there'd been a fair bit more growth but quite a few of the larger stipes are split along part of their length.

I had a quick look on the site and most posts seem to suggest that it's a consequence of fast growth, so I don't think I should be worried, but if anyone could confirm that there isn't a problem it'd put my mind at ease !

The veil is almost completely broken on one of the larger fruits so I'm anticipating harvesting imminently.

So I decided that since the majority of the veils had broken by the time I got home today that I would harvest the lot. There weren't really enough worth leaving to grow more.

I weighed them in at a respectable 237g and transferred them straight to my fan drying chamber. Hopefully they won't have to spend too long in there because it isn't the quietest contraption in the world.

The cake is now soaking again ready for the next flush. And I'm finally giving my mini electric blanket a rest after being on constantly for 3 weeks. Thankfully those things have fairly strict electrical safety regulations!

So after 24 hours in my fan chamber the shrooms had shrunk significantly but were still flexible.

I left them fanning for a further 6 hours and there wasn't really any noticeable difference (it's really humid here at the moment), so I've now moved onto calcium chloride.

About a day later and if anything the mushrooms are more moist. Is this normal? Like would water drawn to the surface make them feel wetter? They're certainly very flexible anyway. I've put some tape around the edges of the container in case it was drawing in outside moisture from the cracks.

A few days after soaking and there are already a few pins showing.

The moisture could be because you don't have enough desiccant and it's reached capacity or it's just pulling the moisture out from inside the mushies and it's coming to the surface. Add more desiccant, put em back in the fan box, or wait.
