Well how would you like to be my spawn supplier? I'll pay you $1 per pound plus shipping.

I think I will trust the only 'trusted cultivator' who has posted on this thread. There's reasons why they get that label. Amycel, let's see what you are made of.

Most of the "trusted cultivators" are cube growers. I wouldn't sell spawn but I'd love to help you make your own. I could probably do a free culture

I don't think you're gonna find anyone to sell you spawn at cost.

Oh yeah, during my process of moving, I discovered that my roommate threw out all of my cultures. Then the bastard denied it, while admitting to throwing away 1 petri dish. Should have followed the basic rule of always having backups. I had a really good oyster strain that fruited in 100 degree temps outdoors (pictured in my signature), and a cordyceps, among several others. Those two were priceless to me. I should have gotten revenge on that one...

Revenge only accentuates the negative cycle.
I can send you clean injectable culture of this beast.
If I were you I'd invest in some silicone, synthetic filter disks, jars, and order a 50lb sack of organic soft white winter wheat. Should be about 50-60$ total. Use a forstner bit to cut a 1/2" or 1/4" hole in the center or each hole. trace circles from your disks with a penny. attatch with silicone (breather) then towards one side of the lid, make a small hole just big enough for a needle. dab both sides of that hole with silicone. ( Injector port) Soak the wheat for 24hrs. boil until tender, approx 15min, strain & steam till exterior is dry . Load into jars and pc 1.5hrs. ,,,,,,,,,
then you'll have spawn for 2 years. not shitty sawdust spawn either. powerhouse, thick white grain spawn. I don't see too much going wrong for your fast track to unlimited spawn.

Oeric, what filter discs do you use? I'm just about to get away from my old school tyvek/polyfill routine but I'm not sure which are the best (read: cheapest) to use.

I used to make lids exactly like that when I first started. Then after multiple uses, they would deteriorate and allow contaminates in. Better to just leave the filter discs intact and inoculate inside of a glove box, or in front of a flow hood. The reason I made lids that way was that I was intimidated by sterile procedure, and wanted to avoid contamination. Turned out to have the opposite effect.
Semi-interesting side story: I was taking a plant pathology lab at the time, and my entire class of 20ish people inoculated petri dishes of PDA with some plant disease. It was done in open air, and not one single dish contaminated. Thus, I got over my fear of sterile procedure, made myself a glove box, and started using agar.
Filters were from fungi perfecti. The price is a little intimidating, but they last forever, and pay for themselves.

aloha has the cheapest filter discs by far but i think they are cellulose. $25 for 90. i get synthetic ones from mycosupply, theyre like a buck each so i may switch.

Sorry no pics, my girlfriend has them. I will post soon. I did get a decent harvest with the Amycel 3015 strain, even while allowing my fruiting room to reach temps of 85 degrees. Nicely shaped, big meaty clusters, despite the heat. One thing that went wrong was that I put micropore tape over the holes and left it too long, which limited my harvest to about 7 lbs (from 1 55gal barrel of straw). I picked the 1st 4lbs and sold to a restaurant. The rest took another couple of days to mature, but got a gnat infestation. I kept those ones. I expect a good 9 lbs first flush harvest from a 55gal. barrel of straw, I think next batch will do that. Should be fruiting soon. Hopefully this time I can make it to the farmers market. I also have another case of 3015, which was shipped in 95 degree heat. Looks like it's alive, but we will see. It was good to finally have a harvest after 3 failures. Start chipping away at all that money I wasted on Sylvan.

Don't be so sensitive
I take back what I said about amycel, turns out my issues were contaminated straw. some bales I get are nice and fluffy and some are really compact. the compact ones usually are contaminated on the inside with mold. I've been using it for the last couple of days and leap off is almost comparable to my own spawn, it has been in the refrigerator for at least a month maybe two.
So can we kiss and makeup now or what?
