is it to late?
    #18823569 - 09/10/13 01:56 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I am on my second attempt growing mushrooms( the first didn't go so well)
I started with  PC B+ spores and Golden teacher spores and injected 4 mushbags

I have 3 mushbags that I covered in vermiculite moved into a fruiting chamber. They have been sitting there doing nothing for 2 weeks until I left the lid off last night 9so I probably need more fresh air / I didn't do the bottom holes) you can see in the picture as of today there are a few that just started!

the other one is still in the the bag and growing some small ones so I never bothered to move it into the chamber just dropped some verm in. I figured why mess with it it actually started fruiting before I opened the bag

I did not realize you could break the cakes up so what I am wondering is if it is to late to do this technique with either the 3 in the box or the one in the bag.

Should I wash off the vermiculite I put on these cakes and break them up into flat containers like it says?

Is it possible to let the first flush go by pick it then break up the cake and do this technique?

or should I just let this one go as is and try it on the next round?

thanks

Just fruit them as is....breaking them up and casing them is not going to improve your potential yield.

If you want more out of the substrate, research spawning to bulk substrate.

But even then you want fresh and vigorous mycellium, not mycellium that is consolidated and fruiting.

So if I had done it earlier when they were first fully inoculated would that have been a better method than leaving them whole with thin verm layer like I did?

should I take the one out of the bag and put it into a chamber?

What about after the first flush should I dunk/refrigerate for 24hours?

Thanks

'fully inoculated' isnt a real thing. if you mean colonized, the breaking them up into a bulk substrate then yes, but thats a completely different procedure that will require a good amount of reading before attempting. Also, casing is unnecessary for those mushrooms -- imo it would be a waste of time to case it, but perhaps an interesting learning experience.

do you have a chamber? you might just wanna leave them where they are, but they look long and skinny and perhaps you should give it more fresh air (FAE) at different times throughout the day.

you could dunk it after the first flush for a second flush.

you should follow hacker's advice and look into bulk. Once you do the reading, its really not that much more work for the amount of return you get.

That all depends on your definition of "a better method".....

Adding a casing layer does not increase yield....spawning to bulk does...

If you want....if there is room....but it looks like there's not....

Yes, dunk for 24 hours, but not in the fridge, just cool tap water.

Cold shocking does nothing for tropical species...
