Always have some grain at top of jars that wont fully colonize
    #18824814 - 09/10/13 07:06 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Ive been noticing that i never can get my jars of rye to colonize fully leaving a few grains at the very top of jars that just dont seem to get taken over. Anyone have similar problems?

Im wondering if its the tyvek envelopes i use for ge filters? I know they are shitty but am told they work just fine. Could this be the issue that the grains are drying out before full colonization or am i letting my rye dry to long before loading them in jars to pc?

I know i use the flimsiest thinnest parts of the tyvek envelope for ge filters so maybe i should get the thicker parts if anyone is familiar with this type of tyvek which you can get at the post office. I use a hole puncher which is a 1/4" so not to big of holes

I pretty often have that problem.  It has never caused any other problems yet.  I don't use tyvek, I use polyfil.

I bet you are right, it is a matter of them drying out more as the process goes on.  Although, it should colonize rye as long as it isnt seriously dehydrated, which I can tell by looking, mine never are.

I semi-frequently have this issue.  What is the humidity level in the room the jars are in?  Mine is 55%, which I think inhibits the myc from colonizing the top.
