Thinking about getting my CDLs and becoming a truck driver..

So due to my recent unemployed status, i've been thinking about becoming a truck driver...My last job, I drove a truck around selling/delivering 5 gallon water jugs. The truck was over 26,000lbs so I was technically suppose to have my CDL's. The company had some loophole or some shit. They told me there were modifications done to the truck so if I was to ever get pulled over I would have to show them a paper or get a ticket for driving without CDL's..It was basically a big box/bay truck.
I don't know if that will count for experience or not..But they only paid me around 30k per year which isn't shit, especially for how hard I had to work. I figure why not get my CDL's and double that...The only part I don't like is having to go over the road and being gone for days at a time. Are any of you guys truck drivers? Do you like it?
I'm at a crossroad..It's either this or try to find a computer job..Which I don't yet have a degree for. I've got a couple leads, but they both pay around the same as my last job. Driving a truck is starting to look really tempting.

No, I don't live in a mansion. I live in a small house and I have bills. My house payments alone are almost 10k a year. Not to mention other bills and money to live on and savings...You must live at home with your parents still..

I could live pretty great on 30k a year, but I also wouldn't want to only make 30k a year if I felt I deserved more. Can't really give you any advice though. One of my dad's friends was a regional truck driver, that seemed alright. He had time for his hobbies and seemed to make a decent living. More like hauling loads from town to town instead of having to be gone for days at a time transporting shit from state to state.

I was thinking about becoming a truck driver a while back.
Good money and you get to see lots of new places.
But, you are stuck in a truck, driving, for weeks sometimes.
I'd do it at least for a while if I didn't have animals or a girlfriend. Most of the big truck companies will train you to get your CDL and immediately put you on the road when you finish training. You pay the training back by signing a contract to work for them for a year or 6 months.
And truckers typically get paid 50k+ starting out, not 30k. They spend a ton of time on the road. Good way to save money.
Pretty sweet gig if you can sit that much.

Yeah, I would really like to do regional. A good friend of mine works for a food delivery company and he only went out 2 times a week. He'd leave sunday night and be back tuesday morning, then leave thurdsay morning and be back late friday early saturday. He makes 60-70k.
If I do decide to get my CDL's, i'm going to go ahead and get my hazmat and doubles endorsements. It's pretty easy. When he got his, I helped him study for the test and I passed the pretests.

I've called a bunch of companies and barely any of them still do that. I was told by a few of them, I would be better off getting the money to get my CDL's then signing on with them because the select rare few that still pay for your CDL's sign you into a shitty year contract.
The 30k I was talking about was from my last job. The water delivery job. Not really a truck driving job, but I did drive a big bay truck. I would be making around 60k if I were to get my CDL's and an actual truck driving job.

im a delivery driver and rent an affordable 2-bedroom home. i live with a friend, we split bills and rent. i spend 2/3 as much as i earn, and save 1/3. i also have a side-job writing website articles which gives me an extra hundred or so per month (which pays for all my food basically)

No, all the major truck companies still do it.
Research it a little bit, not hard to find.

The guy that I do fireworks shows with is a truck driver for his real job. He's been doing it for like 15 years. Now he's not on the road much, he mainly does training and teaching of new drivers and is making around $105,000 a year. If you have any questions feel free to ask me, I've talked to him about it a lot. You would probably want to go ahead and get your CDL before going to a trucking company. Eventually you're going to have to get all kinds of special endorsements for hazmat. It's a lot of studying.

I have my class one license and I deliver product to stores and stuff. There are so many jobs out there for truck drivers man, the trick is to get experience but once you land a job you have a lot of opportunities open up for you. Not all driving jobs require you to be in a truck for 12 or more hours a day, I work usually 7-10 hours a day, usually about 7 but thats because I choose to. In a two week period most times I put in 70 hours and make about 1400$ a cheque.... Where as other jobs I worked like 50+hours a week and get like 950$ a cheque, fuck that man I'm done working my ass off for nothing.
So I'd recommend getting you CDL, why the fuck not? There are so many gravy jobs out there too, a lot of people drive gravel or dirt and shit all day and make mad cash. Money isn't everything but I'm extremely happy a friend of mine recommended me getting my license, It's probably one of the best decisions I've made in a while to be honest.

Yup, my mother inlaw's husband does produce dilivery and makes a decent check. The hours for him are a bit off, early mornings etc.. After you get some experiance you can also try and get on driving garbage trucks. A friend of mine is trying to do that. He's got about 4 years now driving long haul, he hates it, but another friend of mine loves it. If you live around areas that require snow plow operators you might be able to get on with the county or the DOT and make a killing in benefits and retirement, govt jobs FTW!
Just some other ideas for a CDL.

Thanks Gumby! I'll definitely keep that in mind. I think i've made up my mind to go ahead and get them. I think it's around $1,000 at the local community college to get them.
A delivery job wouldn't be too bad. Basically what I did before. The only thing I don't think I want to do is the cross country driving. As long as i'm not gone a week at a time it would be okay. A day or two wouldn't be bad.

I have been researching it. The ones around me don't offer it anymore. The few that I have found that still do, don't pay you shit and it's not even worth it.

Pretty obvious question OP, but do you like to drive?
I know lots of people that don't mind. Personally, I hate it. I couldn't have a job driving 8-10 hrs a day every day. No chance.

A lot of trucking doesn't involve being gone for a week. The guy I know never does a run that is longer than 550 miles one way per day. Back when he was on the road and not teaching he used to drive from South Brunswick, NJ to Albany, NY every night. He did the cross country stuff like from NJ to San Diego for a while. He said that's where you make the most money. He works for Con-Way and I believe he said they pay 65 cents a mile. If you're doing an 1,100 mile run in one day that ends up being $750 a day for about 12 hours of work. He also has benefits and a retirement package.

I remember this driver with a big sleeper cab and a 55' trailer trying to back in to a job site in Brooklyn. Dude was from Alabama, and this was his first time in NYC. He's like $20 for an 18 wheeler at the GWB? (I think it's $85 cash now for 5 axles, cheaper with EZPass) He was fuckin' shaking, freaked out. Y'all drive crazy. Fuck this place, why'd I take this route?
He finally got in the dock after maybe 30 minutes, kept sayin' fuck NY, I'm never coming back, I felt bad for him... . . .

My dad is a truck driver all of a sudden. 6 months ago he was a Hospice nurse case manager making $95k a year. Then all of a sudden... BAM! He gets his CDL and is in North carolina right this minute hauling a load toward Ohio. He works for Werner and makes like half what he used to, but he seems to enjoy it.

The cross country trips and the team drives are what entry level drivers usually have to do in order to get their foot in the door. After you have been a cross country driver or team driver for a while, better positions where you get to be home more will open up.

My Dad has been a truck driver his whole life, he's in his late 50's now and you know half and half maybe he's just burned out so take it with a grain of salt but he really talks down on truck driving. He says you are just a billboard that says sue me for the corporation, any accident even ones not your fault can destroy your life let alone your career. Companies generally look at you as easily replaceable in today's world and the hours are long, exhausting mentally. Weights are becoming larger, regulations are thicker, the roads are getting more busy. Get ready to get familiar with the DOT (Department of Transportation) because they'll have your name all over their systems. I mean people, the public, are fucking nuts on the roads too. Doing that all day every day 12 hours or whatever, fuck. It's good hard work though, you travel. Maybe it's just because I've heard it talked down a lot but I'd never do it. That shit would've been awesome in 1976 but not in 2013, no way.

My pops is a trucker as well and still wouldnt change careers. Its just his thing. He likes the comfort of being on his own out on the road. Its a way of life for some, especially for those who dont fit in. Plus he can work 4 on 4 off whereas with most careers you are a slave to the 5 on 2 off routine. Tho i hear its better for truckers in canada where the pigs arent as fat and the roads not as noisy.

Yeah for sure, he's tried other shit briefly but he went back to trucking I'm sure for all the shit you mention, it's just in his blood at this point. You gotta respect that too, the knowledge of the roads truckers have. They are badass.
